"If you are familiar with Jaynesian theory, you understand that conscious interiority is not a biological given. It is a recently learned cultural technology -- one that succeeded the hallucinated voices of the bicameral mind. We moved from a world orchestrated by the monumental architecture of ancient ziggurats -- where hallucinated gods directed every action -- to a civilization on the verge of handing it's executive function to a modern, global network of of artificial superintelligence

"When the hallucinated voices of the gods fell silent in ancient texts, human beings had to construct a new internal world to replace them. But by what exact mechanism did we build the subjective mind that took their place? Modern cognitive psychology often struggles with this question because it routinely conflates innate biological perception with true subjective consciousness. ..."Learn more by reading "Conversations on Consciousness and the Bicameral Mind," currently on sale

"It is possible (advisable?) to strip away all the variations, dissimilarities, and kaleidoscopic richness and search for major patterns in world religions? Of course, the question in the social sciences, ever since they took shape since the Enlightenment, has been “are there universal, uniform, and unchangeable deep truths about human nature buried under the messy, unique particulars of place and period?” Each discipline contouring the current intellectual landscape differs depending on how

"Modern psychiatry treats hearing voices as a rare, severe symptom of a broken mind, associating it almost exclusively with conditions like schizophrenia. In this framework, an unbidden voice is proof of a biological malfunction. However, today, hundreds of recent studies have documented auditory hallucinations across a wide spectrum of perfectly healthy populations. These are people with no history of mental illness, who nonetheless report hearing voices with the same clarity as an external

"In 610 CE, isolated in a Mecca mountain cave, and enduring severe fasting, Muhammad experienced a physical encounter with a terrifying, unseen force. Traditionally, history offers us two ways to explain this — either it was a literal visit from an arch-angel, or it was the work of a man suffering from delusions. Yet the records of this event contain specific physical details that don't fit either category. They are too consistent to be dismissed as simple madness, and too clinical to be explained

"In the early 1820s, a fourteen year-old boy walked into the woods of Western New York, and experienced a vivid manifestation of lights and voices. This experience led directly to the dictation of the Book of Mormon, and the establishment of a global religion that now counts millions of members. For over a century, the scientific community has struggled to explain these visions, without resorting to theological claims. The historical record makes a theory of pure fraud difficult to sustain

"The Old Testament depicts a God who commands from the outside — a violent, external presence dictating every human action. But in the New Testament, this character changes, becoming an internal source of compassion and quiet grace. For centuries, theologians have attempted to reconcile this contradiction, using spiritual and moral arguments. Psychologist Julian Jaynes offered a different explanation. He argued that the shift across the Biblical timeline doesn't reflect a change in the

"The story of Abraham and Isaac is a cornerstone of monotheism. God commands a father to sacrifice his only son, and the father obeys without a single word of protest. For millennia, this has been taught as the definitive model of unwavering religious faith. But we have to consider the possibility that Abraham wasn't 'choosing' to be faithful. If he lacked the psychological capacity to debate or choose, his immediate obedience takes on a different meaning..."Learn more by

"In 1976, Princeton University psychologist Julian Jaynes published a thesis arguing that human consciousness is a recently learned process. Before its development, he claimed, our ancestors operated under a bicameral -- or two-chambered -- mentality, where stress-induced hallucinations directed their behavior. Jaynes's fourth hypothesis provided a specific neurological model for this process. ..." Learn more by reading "Conversations on Consciousness and the Bicameral Mind,"

The Invention of the Mind: Julian Jaynes's Ideas on the Origin of Consciousness and the SelfLet's start with a question that sounds, well, it sounds super simple: "Where do our dreams come from?" I mean, for us, right now, the answer feels totally obvious -- almost instinctual. Our dreams, are feelings -- all that stuff -- it comes from that private universe inside our own heads. This quote from the Romantic era just nails it. Our inner life, that personal passion, it's not
