Randall Bock: “Non-scary viruses” | Tom Nelson Pod #434

Tom Nelson ·

2026/10/06

Dr. Randall Bock, a primary-care physician and author of Overturning Zika, argues that public-health research and media often fuel panic to secure funding, citing Peter Hotez’s warnings about dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and a “lights out” U.S. yellow fever scenario. Bock says U.S. sanitation and mosquito control limit these risks and that vaccines could be ramped up quickly. He contends the 2015–16 Brazil Zika–microcephaly crisis was driven by inconsistent microcephaly definitions, weak testing, and

John Costella: “ClimateGate” #433

Tom Nelson ·

2026/10/02

John Costella, a former physicist turned data scientist and software engineer, recounts how watching climate-skeptic films, then reading leaked “Climategate” emails in 2009, changed his trust in climate science. He edited, annotated, and published selected emails, producing a 180-page color book printed by Australia’s Lavoisier Group, arguing the core group was small, politicized, PR-driven, and statistically sloppy, with bullying (including by Michael Mann). He says inquiries cleared wrongdoing but

Tom Nelson ·

2026/09/29

Steve Andrews presents an “extension to the cosmic ray hypothesis” for climate change, building on Svensmark and Shaviv’s idea that galactic cosmic rays influence low clouds and cooling, modulated by solar and Earth magnetic fields. Using UAH satellite temperature anomalies (1979–present), CERES, and Oulu neutron counts, he claims monthly warming-rate peaks occur near equinoxes, varies by region, and differs over land vs ocean. He links this to the Russell–McPherron effect: equinox magnetic

Tom Nelson ·

2026/09/25

Jonathan Cohler, joined by Willie Soon, says he is correcting false statements Ed Berry made about their paper “Dominance of Natural Atmospheric CO2 Dynamics,” which is under review and posted online. Cohler argues Berry wrongly claimed they ignored Berry’s work, presented an identical delta-14C “proof,” and called for a carbon-cycle model; Cohler says they cited Berry prominently and used newer radiocarbon data (Hua et al. 2022) and Koutsoyiannis 2024. They distinguish residence time (~3.8 years)

Eric Huxter: “Metrology vs Meteorology” #430

Tom Nelson ·

2026/09/22

Eric Huxter, a former geography teacher, presents research on UK Met Office maximum temperature records, arguing that the shift from liquid-in-glass thermometers to platinum resistance thermometers (1990–2017) plus station siting and ventilation issues (Aitken effect) produces transient “spikes” that inflate maxima and accelerate apparent warming. Using WeatherObs, Met Office extremes, and purchased 1‑minute Rothamsted data, he finds many maxima occur before the hourly value, with mean rise-to-peak

Ed Berry: “Nature Controls the CO2 Level” #429

Tom Nelson ·

2026/09/18

Ed Berry presents a step-by-step, nontechnical overview of his theoretical climate physics work, arguing that “consensus” and authority claims are not science and that climate policy relies on three assumptions, focusing on A1: humans caused all the CO2 rise. He says A1 depends on a false sub-assumption that human CO2 stays longer than natural CO2, proposing a “climate equivalence principle” that identical molecules behave the same. Using IPCC carbon-cycle data and a linear systems model, he derives

Tom Nelson ·

2026/09/11

Will Wilkinson discusses a biography he was hired to write about Princeton physicist William Happer, combining four chapters of life story with a climate-focused second half arguing science has been politicized. He describes Happer’s decades-long career, including inventing the sodium laser guide star for missile defense and work adapted for medical lung imaging, plus Happer’s “trust and verify” approach and skepticism of models over measurements. They cover Happer’s CO2 Coalition role, controversy

Jonathan Cohler presents a newly submitted paper using mass conservation, isotopic signatures (delta 13C), and multiple datasets to apply the Keeling relation and infer a consistent intercept near -13.2‰ across sites and time spans. He argues this makes fossil fuels (signature ~-28‰) at most 26% of net atmospheric CO2 change and, using preindustrial constraints, essentially ~0–1.3%, contradicting claims by IPCC, NASA, NOAA, EPA, and the CO2 Coalition. He says CO2 residence time is ~3.8 years and

Tom Nelson ·

2026/09/04

James Tooley describes two decades researching “low-cost private schools” serving poor families in India, Africa, rural China, and war-torn countries, arguing parents choose them because government/public schools often abandon children. He cites widespread enrollment (e.g., majorities in parts of Lagos and Kampala), higher standardized test performance, no gender bias, affordability around 10% of family spending, and sustainability as small businesses. He now finds a similar U.S. phenomenon in

Tom Nelson ·

2026/09/01

Tom Harris argues Canada’s claim of warming twice the global average is unreliable because northern data coverage is sparse and “homogenized” station adjustments may exaggerate trends. He questions the meaning of average temperature and says Canada’s record shows a step change around 1998, consistent with El Niño and possibly the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, not steady greenhouse-gas forcing. He cites extreme-weather records peaking in the 1930s and references Heartland’s Climate Change

Tom Nelson ·

2026/08/28

Dai Ato presents findings from three papers arguing atmospheric CO2 rise is largely natural, claiming multivariate analyses reject human emissions as a significant predictor of annual CO2 increases while sea surface temperature (SST) is significant. He says detrended annual-change comparisons show emissions vs CO2 change has near-zero correlation, while SST retains moderate correlation, consistent with CO2 solubility in water. He also claims ice-core CO2 reconstructions are incorrect and that

Ron Clutz continues a three-part framework on climate change: humans cause warming, warming is dangerous, and government can stop it. He argues observed warming can be explained by post–Little Ice Age recovery plus multidecadal oscillations and solar-orbital effects, and says “alarmists” deny these. He describes a taxpayer-funded “climate scare machine” and cites a Climate Change Business Journal estimate of a $3.4T/year global climate industry. Using Joseph D’Aleo’s materials, he disputes claims

2026/08/18

Henrik Svensmark discusses how solar activity modulates cosmic rays, which ionize the atmosphere and can help form aerosols that grow into cloud condensation nuclei, potentially altering clouds and Earth’s energy balance. He describes lab experiments showing more aerosols with increased ionization, critiques models that predicted no cloud effect, and presents observations from Forbush decreases where drops in cosmic rays are followed days later by reduced aerosols, cloud changes, and

Thomas Kurz discusses chapters from his book Why There Is No Climate Crisis, citing positive reviews, then explains the greenhouse effect and argues CO2’s warming is limited and logarithmic. He claims doubling CO2 yields about 3 W/m² effective forcing, or ~0.9°C via Stefan–Boltzmann calculations, and says even burning all known fossil fuel reserves would add under ~1°C. He argues “climate crisis” claims rely on compounded positive feedbacks in IPCC models, but says observations show models

Willie Soon and Jonathan Cohler argue the rise in atmospheric CO2 is mostly natural, challenging claims it is 100% manmade from hydrocarbon burning. They cite analyses using bomb-produced carbon-14 showing a single-exponential decay and a short CO2 atmospheric residence time (~3.8 years), contrasting with IPCC claims of thousands of years and criticizing undefined terms like “adjustment time.” They say their work falsifies the Suess effect and that delta-13C of atmospheric change stays near -13‰
