Counterfeit Money: From Clipped Coins to North Korean...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

Counterfeiting is often called the world's second oldest profession, and this episode traces it from Lydia around 600 BC, where plated fakes appeared almost as soon as coins did, to the security features in a modern wallet. Early forgers clipped the edges of coins or shook them in leather bags to collect gold dust. Rulers answered with savage penalties: decapitation in China, burning at the stake in Florence, and in 1690 England the execution of Thomas and Anne Rogers for clipping just 40 pieces of

Black Friday's Real Origin: Philadelphia Traffic...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

The popular story says Black Friday is the day retailers finally move from red ink to black. This episode shows that tale was invented in the early 1980s. The name actually came from police in Philadelphia and Rochester in the 1950s and 60s, who used it for the gridlock, smog, and crowds that hit downtown after Thanksgiving, made worse by the Army-Navy football game. Before that, the phrase marked disasters like the Panic of 1869, when Jay Gould and James Fisk tried to corner the gold market and

The Comstock Lode: Stolen Credit, Blue Mud, and a...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

The first great silver strike in American history was found by men who thought it was trash. Gold miners in the Virginia Range of present-day Nevada kept clogging their equipment with a heavy, sticky material they called the blue stuff. It was silver sulfide. This episode tells who really found it: the Grosh brothers, trained mineralogists who both died in 1857 before they could stake a claim, and Henry Comstock, the loud opportunist who went through their trunk and later bluffed his way into a

Company Scrip: From Coal Town Debt Traps to Amazon...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

In 1965, as the United States raced toward the moon, Martin Luther King Jr. met plantation workers in the Deep South who had never seen or held a piece of official American currency. They were paid in scrip, private money issued by an employer and good only at the employer's own store. This episode explains how a practical fix for remote logging and mining camps, where shipping cash was dangerous, hardened into a system for keeping workers in place through inflated prices and steep exchange fees. The

Shrinkflation Explained: Toblerone Gaps, Pringles,...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

The Pringles tube got narrower, the stack got shorter, and the price stayed the same. This episode examines shrinkflation, the practice that boardrooms call package downsizing or price pack architecture. Companies fear raising a sticker price because shoppers treat a price as a kind of social contract, an idea economists call the invisible handshake. So they shrink the product instead, guided by Weber's Law and the just noticeable difference, the threshold below which a change escapes conscious

Jiaozi: How Song Dynasty China Invented Paper Money...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

In 11th century Sichuan, money was made of iron. The coins were cheap, heavy, and so low in value that a large purchase could require wagons and pack mules. Merchants in Chengdu found a way around the weight. They took deposits of iron coins and handed back paper promissory notes called jiaozi, which could be traded in place of the metal. This episode traces how those private receipts, at first issued in no standard denominations, became the world's first recognized paper currency. After the 16

The Chia Pet Story: How Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia Sold 15 Million...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

When the New York Times sealed a time capsule in the year 2000 to be opened in the year 3000, a Chia Pet went inside. This episode explains how a grooved terracotta figurine earned that place. The trick is botanical. Seeds of Salvia hispanica turn sticky when soaked, so they cling to curved clay, and the porous terracotta slowly feeds them water from a hollow center until a coat of green sprouts appears in a couple of weeks. The business began at a Chicago housewares show in 1977, where marketer

Razor and Blades: The Business Model Behind the $39...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

A printer that costs 39 dollars is not a bargain. It is the first payment on years of ink. This episode examines the razor and blades business model, in which a company sells a base product cheaply, sometimes at a loss, because it is useless without a consumable only that company supplies. The story starts by correcting a legend. King Camp Gillette did not give away his razor handles. He sold them at a premium until his patents expired in 1921, and only a flood of clone razors forced the price

Calouste Gulbenkian: How Mr. Five Percent Brokered...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

Asked by the Ottoman finance minister to survey the oil of Mesopotamia, a young engineer never left home. Calouste Gulbenkian read travel books, questioned railway engineers, and produced a report accurate enough to persuade the Sultan to buy the land. Born in Constantinople in 1869 to a wealthy Armenian family in the kerosene trade, he earned a first-class degree from King's College London at 18. Then the Hamidian massacres of 1896 drove his family to Egypt, and the prodigy became a refugee. That

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

On the night of June 20, 1947, a gunman rested an M1 carbine on a trellis outside a Beverly Hills mansion and fired through the living room window, killing Benjamin Siegel as he read the Los Angeles Times. This episode traces how he got to that couch. Born around 1906 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to poor Jewish immigrants, he started by charging pushcart vendors a dollar not to burn their carts, then teamed with Meyer Lansky and helped Lucky Luciano build a national crime syndicate and its enforcement

William Jennings Bryan's Cross of Gold: The Speech...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

On July 9, 1896, inside a sweltering Chicago Coliseum, a 36-year-old former congressman from Nebraska sat eating a sandwich to settle his stomach. Minutes later William Jennings Bryan gave a speech that won him the Democratic nomination for president. This episode explains the anger behind it: the end of silver coinage in what critics called the Crime of 73, a deflation that crushed indebted farmers, the Panic of 1893, and a gold standard president, Grover Cleveland, whom his own party wanted to

Bretton Woods 1944: How 44 Nations Made the Dollar King

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

In July 1944, a month after Normandy, delegates from 44 Allied nations gathered at the Mount Washington Hotel in New Hampshire to redesign the world's money. They were haunted by the 1930s, when unpayable war debts, competitive devaluations, and hostile trade blocs helped set the stage for war. This episode recounts the duel at the center of the conference, between Britain's John Maynard Keynes, who wanted a shared world currency called the bancor, and America's Harry Dexter White, who wanted a

Card Counting in Blackjack: The Simple Math Casinos...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

Rain Man made card counting look like a feat of photographic memory. The truth is plainer and harder. A counter tracks one thing only: the ratio of high cards to low cards left in the shoe. In the Hi-Lo system, twos through sixes count as plus one, tens, face cards, and aces as minus one, and sevens through nines as zero. This episode explains why a deck rich in tens and aces favors the player, and why the dealer's fixed rules are the weakness that makes it work. The math is easy at home and grueling

This episode follows the device from the BlackBerry 850 of 1999, with its thumb keyboard and push email, to a peak of 85 million users and a spot in the dictionary under the word CrackBerry. The same strengths that won over corporate IT departments left the

On September 16, 1992, the British government spent billions defending the pound, raised interest rates twice in a single day, and still lost. This episode explains how the United Kingdom walked into that trap. In October 1990 it joined the European Exchange Rate Mechanism at 2.95 Deutschmarks to the pound, with a hard floor of 2.773, tying a high inflation economy in recession to a disciplined Germany whose Bundesbank was raising rates to pay for reunification.Currency traders saw the mismatch and

BitConnect launched in February 2016 with a pitch that sounded like a cheat code. Trade your Bitcoin for its own token, BCC, lock it up for four to ten months, and a secret trading bot would pay you 1 percent interest every single day. The bot never existed. New deposits paid old investors, a multi-level referral system turned victims into recruiters, and a closed internal exchange pushed BCC from 17 cents to an all-time high of 463 dollars by December 2017.This episode sets aside the jokes to trace

In 2013 someone threw away a hard drive holding the private keys to 7,500 bitcoins, and no government, manufacturer, or hacker can ever get them back. That unforgiving design is the subject of this episode, which treats Bitcoin itself as the biography, since its pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto vanished from the internet in 2010. The story begins with the failed cypherpunk experiments that came first, from David Chaum's e-cash to Hashcash, Bit Gold, and B-Money, and the two problems that sank

On a 1984 flight from Paris to London, Jane Birkin's wicker basket tipped over and scattered scripts, makeup, and baby supplies across the cabin floor. The man beside her, Jean-Louis Dumas, happened to run Hermès. When she complained that the house made nothing roomy enough for a mother, he sketched a soft, two-handled tote on the spot and asked to name it after her. This episode follows that sketch from a saddlery founded in 1837 to the most coveted handbag on earth. The price is only partly about

This episode connects the two halves of the man through one event: born Benjamin Grossbaum in London in 1894 and raised in New York, he lost his father young and watched the panic of 1907 push his family into poverty. He spent the rest of his life seeking security that could be

Barry Minkow was a telemarketer for a carpet cleaner at nine and the founder of ZZZZ Best at 16, running it from his parents' garage before he had a driver's license. By 1987 Wall Street valued the company at $280 million. This episode explains what the valuation rested on: a fake insurance restoration division, verified to banks by a phantom firm called Interstate Appraisal Services, that supplied 86 percent of reported revenue.
