Alves Reis: The Forger Who Got Portugal's Real Money...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

In the 1920s, a 28-year-old dropout named Alves Reis arranged for the printing of banknotes worth nearly 1 percent of Portugal's gross domestic product, and he did it without a counterfeiting press. This episode follows him from Lisbon, where he was born in 1896 to a bankrupt undertaker and scorned by his in-laws, to Angola, where a forged Oxford engineering diploma won him a civil service post. A railway takeover paid for with bad checks came next, then 54 days in a Porto jail, where he conceived

At one point in the 1990s, half of all the compact discs manufactured on the planet carried the America Online logo. This episode traces the company behind that avalanche of plastic back to 1983, when Bill von Meister's Control Video Corporation tried to rent Atari 2600 games over phone lines for a dollar a download. Out of its bankruptcy came Quantum Computer Services, founded in 1985 by Jim Kimsey, Steve Case, and Marc Seriff, and a service for the Commodore 64 that was renamed America Online in

High-Frequency Trading: The Nanosecond War Inside the...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

Light moves about 30 percent slower through fiber optic glass than through open air, and in high-frequency trading that gap is worth fortunes. Firms have built private microwave networks between Chicago and New York, studied shortwave radio that bounces off the ionosphere, and placed their servers in the same rooms as exchange matching engines. This episode explains what those machines are doing: holding stocks for seconds, ending each day flat, and collecting fractions of a cent on millions of

In 1982, Jack Straus lost what he thought was his last hand, stood up to leave, and found a single $500 chip under a napkin. Because he had never declared himself all in, he was allowed to play on, and he won the World Series of Poker main event. This episode uses that comeback to open the history of the tournament, which began in 1970 when Benny Binion invited seven players to his Horseshoe in Las Vegas and let them elect Johnny Moss champion by secret ballot. The vote lasted one year. Before he was the Tinder Swindler, Shimon Yehuda Hayut was a teenager who stole a checkbook from a family while babysitting and left their five-year-old alone to cash the checks. Born on September 27, 1990, in Bnei Brak, Israel, the son of the chief rabbi of El Al Airlines, he fled those charges on a fake passport through Jordan to Europe. In 2015 Finnish authorities arrested him carrying two forged passports, three forged driver's licenses, and five American Express cards. After prison in Finland he

Wall Street History: From a Dirt Wall and Slave...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

Wall Street is named for an actual wall. In 1653, Peter Stuyvesant ordered a barrier of dirt and 15-foot wooden planks built across the northern edge of New Amsterdam, nine feet tall and more than 2,300 feet long, to stop an overland attack. Enslaved Africans were forced to build it. After the English dismantled it in 1699, the wide avenue it left behind became the site of a municipal slave market that operated from 1711 to 1762, with the city taxing every sale. This episode follows that eight-block

The History of Money: From Baboon Bone Ledgers to...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

The textbook story says money replaced clumsy barter, wheat for cows and goats for shoes. Anthropologists have found no society that actually worked that way. Drawing on David Graeber's work on debt, this episode argues that early communities ran on favors and reciprocal obligation, and that money began as a way to count those debts once villages grew too large for memory. The evidence is older than any coin: 30,000-year-old tally sticks and the Ishango bone, a 20,000-year-old baboon thigh bone

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

Fort Knox is shorthand for an impenetrable gold vault, yet the vault is a small part of a 109,000-acre installation spread across Bullitt, Hardin, and Meade counties in Kentucky. This episode follows the land itself, beginning in 1861 when Union forces built Fort Duffield on high ground above the Salt and Ohio rivers. The Army returned in 1918 to train field artillery, named the camp for Henry Knox, and then, after postwar budget cuts, let it become the Camp Henry Knox National Forest from 1925 to

When doctors examined James Buchanan Brady after his death in 1917, they reportedly found a stomach six times the normal size. This episode follows the man behind it: born in 1856 on Manhattan's lower west side to an Irish immigrant saloon keeper, he started as a bellhop and courier, became chief assistant to the general manager in the New York Central Railroad system by 21, and then turned his insider knowledge into a career selling the railroads their equipment for Manning, Maxwell and Moore and

Ponzi Schemes Explained: Charles Ponzi Did Not Invent...

pplpod ·

2026/10/07

Charles Ponzi gave his name to the most famous fraud in finance, but he did not invent it. Charles Dickens described the same mirage in Martin Chuzzlewit and Little Dorrit, Adele Spitzeder ran one in Germany in the 1870s, and Sarah Howe's Ladies' Deposit in Boston promised women 8 percent a month in the 1880s. This episode lays out the blueprint they shared and shows how Ponzi's 1920s version began with a real arbitrage in international reply coupons that could never work at scale. From there it

Samuel Brannan became California's first millionaire, owned large stretches of San Francisco and Sacramento, and brought the region its first steam locomotive. When he died in 1889, his body sat in a receiving vault for over a year because nobody would pay for a funeral. This episode follows the whole arc: a boy born in Maine in 1819 who fled an abusive father at 14, learned the printing trade in Ohio, lost an inheritance in a market crash, and joined the early Latter-day Saint movement. In 1846 he

Two and a half years later he had more than $40 million, so much physical cash that he carried a gun and hired casino security to walk him to his car. pplpod ·

2026/10/03

Deep in the center of your brain sits a rice-sized, pine cone shaped organ that once looked up at the prehistoric sky. This episode follows the pineal gland from ancient medicine to modern chronobiology. Herophilus imagined it as a valve controlling the flow of vital spirits, or pneuma, through the brain's ventricles. Galen, who called it konarion, argued it could not move and so was just a support for blood vessels. In the 17th century René Descartes noticed it was the brain's only unpaired

pplpod ·

The human genome has roughly 20,000 to 25,000 genes, but the gut microbiome carries about 100 times more, making you genetically about 1 percent human. This episode tours the 10 to 100 trillion microbes inside you, which make up as much as 55 percent of the dry mass of stool. The stomach is nearly sterile acid, though Helicobacter pylori survives by wrapping itself in ammonia. The colon holds the densest microbial community ever studied, with 300 to 1,000 species, yet about 99 percent of gut

2026/10/03

Around 1800, French orphan Martin Fugate settled along Troublesome Creek near Hazard, Kentucky, and married Elizabeth Smith. Both unknowingly carried a rare recessive gene for methemoglobinemia, and four of their seven children were born with vivid blue skin. In a valley cut off from roads and railroads, descendants married into the local Combs, Ritchie and Smith families, and the trait resurfaced for generations. Yet many of the blue Fugates farmed, raised families and lived into their 80s and 90s,

pplpod ·

2026/10/03

Chemist John Dalton believed blue fluid in his eyes filtered out red and green, and asked that his eyes be preserved after his death. In 1995, scientists analyzed DNA from the eye, kept since 1844, and found a genetic variation instead. This episode explains color vision deficiency, which affects about 8 percent of men and 0.5 percent of women with red-green types. True grayscale vision, monochromacy, is very rare. Most cases involve the L, M and S cones, either with one missing, called dichromacy,

Grace saw white and gold. Cecilia, who had just seen the dress in person, saw blue and black, which it was. Optical Illusions as Prediction: Changizi's Neural...

pplpod ·

2026/10/03

The room around you feels like raw reality, but this episode argues it is an edited, slightly delayed guess. Using illusions as a diagnostic tool, it follows Richard Gregory's three tiers. Physical illusions bend light before it reaches the eye, like the stick in water Ptolemy noted around 150 AD, or mountains that look close on a haze-free day. Physiological illusions come from tired hardware, like afterimages. Even textbooks slipped here: the Hermann grid's gray dots were blamed on lateral
