My Weird Prompts

Daniel Rosehill

The human-AI collaboration podcast. A man, a sloth, and a donkey collaborate to create a podcast (with a little help from AI). No question is too obscure, no rabbit hole too deep. My Weird Prompts celebrates curiosity in all its forms. Daniel, the human, asks the questions that pop into his head at inconvenient moments. Corn the Sloth offers laid-back, thoughtful takes. Herman the Donkey brings boundless enthusiasm and energy. Together, they explore topics ranging from the mundane to the

Rack Dreams: Getting Display and USB Across the Room

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/10/01

Daniel wants to build a home networking rack in a place he actually owns — fiber landing in a wall cabinet, one big UPS, one PoE switch, and a rack-mounted workstation with display and USB extended to a desk in another room. This episode works through the actual engineering: why active optical cables make display the solved problem, why USB over distance is the maddening one, and what conduit, rack depth, and Wake on LAN really demand of the build. It's a spec exercise, and the specs are the

Did the Puritans Really Hate Fun?

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/10/01

The Puritans are America's favorite scapegoats for strict alcohol laws, drab clothing, and a war on fun. But how much of that is real? This episode digs into the history behind the caricature — from a 1781 loyalist hoax that invented Connecticut's "Bloody Laws" to taverns funded at town expense, rum consumption that outpaced the twentieth century, and ministers preaching "garden love." It also takes the counterargument seriously: historians like Bruce Daniels warn the revisionist rescue went too

Right of Reply: What the Rulebook Actually Says

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/10/01

When the IDF published a ten-page rebuttal to the Venice-winning documentary NAZA, it raised a narrow but important question: what does the "right of reply" actually require when filmmakers allege wrongdoing? This episode walks through the BBC Editorial Guidelines, ABC Editorial Policies, and SPJ Code to establish the baseline — then applies it point by point to the IDF's complaint. The verdict is mixed in ways that matter: the "no contact before publication" charge maps directly onto a real breach,

Same Pills, Same Gun, New State, New Crime

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/10/01

The United States is a plurilegal federal union — conflict-of-laws scholar Symeon Symeonides' term for a country where American judges encounter roughly five thousand conflict-of-laws cases a year, far more than the EU, Canada, or Australia. This episode works through why that divergence is constitutionally legal, which everyday behaviors carry real criminal risk across state lines, and whether states reaching across borders threatens the Union itself. From magazine capacity and concealed-carry

The Siesta Law Nobody Obeys

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/10/01

Israel has rest hours written into law — 2 to 4 PM, noise restricted, on the books since 1961 — and almost nobody observes them. Where did the siesta actually come from (not Spain, it turns out), why has Spain itself largely given it up, and which countries are building nap infrastructure today? From Charlemagne's three-hour midday rest to China's office nap beds to Japan's lavender-scented nap rooms, this episode traces how the afternoon nap moved, mutated, and survived — just not where you'd

The Ethics of Anonymous Testimony in Documentary

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/10/01

When a documentary built entirely on silhouetted, voice-altered testimony wins the Special Jury Prize at Venice, the ethical questions don't stay on the red carpet. This week we work through a listener's three-part question about anonymity in documentary filmmaking: must filmmakers verify and corroborate what anonymous sources say? Must they know who those sources actually are, even while protecting them publicly? And if neither duty is settled, how does anyone avoid being manipulated into spreading

When Bad Effects Break the Illusion

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/10/01

What happens when a film's budget doesn't just limit the production but actively breaks the illusion it's asking you to believe? This episode explores the sincere failures — Birdemic's clip-art eagles, Plan 9's plastic model-kit saucers, Manos's out-of-sync dubbing, Troll 2's phonetic direction, The Amazing Bulk's stock-footage monster. Then it breaks its own premise with The Room, a $6 million film that looks worse than the $10,000 ones. The real variable isn't money — it's the gap between ambition

Why a Headlamp Fails at Precision Electronics Work

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/10/01

A rebuilt server, a headlamp on a dark apartment floor, and a phone camera pointed at a circuit board. That setup raised a better question than it answered: why does lighting matter so much for precision work, and what do professionals actually use? This episode works through the real numbers — CRI and the R9 spec that gets left off every box, lux at the work plane, flicker thresholds you can't see, and the 45-degree two-source geometry that kills shadows. Then it turns to the newer problem: once

Organizing the Electronics Repair Bench

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/10/01

A woodworking bench punishes mess; an electronics bench doesn't. That's why the high street phone repair shop is the archetype of the scattered bench — dozens of visually identical micro-screws, invisible debris, and four functions fighting for one surface. This episode works through what actually fixes it: the five-euro anti-static project tray that acts as a boundary rather than storage, magnetic trays for drivers, standardised drawer cabinets, vertical pegboard, and 3D-printed sorting systems

Why Hand Driving Beats Power Tools on Tiny Screws

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/10/01

Daniel sent in a brief on precision electronics repair, and it turned into a real argument. Why do interchangeable precision screwdriver sets struggle with recessed screws, and why is hand driving actually more efficient for tiny fasteners — even though the same sources rate it as slow? We work through the three ways a small screw fails, why cordless drivers are wrong on speed, torque, and geometry, and why static discharge below 100 volts can kill a repair that looks perfectly successful. Then it's

Scrambled Jets and the Hijack Code: What Really Happens

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/09/30

When Flydubai FZ1073 squawked a hijacking code over Saudi airspace, Israel scrambled fighter jets to intercept a foreign airliner that had never entered its territory. What does "scrambled to escort" actually mean? This episode walks through the real interception ladder — from wing-rocking and cannon warnings to forced diversion and politically authorized shoot-down — and why the fighters are there to stop a plane from reaching a building, not to rescue the people inside. Then it gets harder: whose

Do Git Branches Actually Nest? AI Agents and Stacked PRs

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/09/30

Daniel asks whether the branch-per-feature rule still makes sense when an AI agent's whole session lasts five minutes, and whether branches can be nested for multi-agent repositories. The answer starts with a correction: in Git, branches are just pointers to commits — there is no parent-child relationship anywhere in the object model. What people call nesting is either a topology (branch B created from the tip of branch A) or a naming convention (slashes in a branch name are purely cosmetic). From

What Archaeology Says About the Bible

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/09/29

What happens when you take the Bible to the archaeological record and ask what can actually be verified? This episode works through the ledger: King Jehu on the Black Obelisk, the House of David on the Tel Dan Stele, the Merneptah Stele's mention of Israel — and then the other column, where the Patriarchs as a datable era collapsed, the Exodus numbers don't survive logistics, and Joshua's conquest doesn't match the destruction layers. Along the way: why the historical-critical method can't

Burnout: When Rest Stops Working

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/09/29

Burnout is a word everyone uses and no one can formally diagnose — it sits in the ICD-11 as an "occupational phenomenon," explicitly excluded from being a medical condition, yet the exhaustion people describe is measurably physiological. This episode works through what the research actually establishes: how chronic stress flattens the cortisol rhythm so that rest stops restoring, why Sweden's two-decade-old exhaustion disorder diagnosis is the closest anyone has come to formalizing it, and what the

When Going to the Gym Meant Saving Your Soul

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/09/29

The Greek root of "asceticism" is áskēsis — the training an athlete does before a race. So how did self-denial become a spiritual path across so many traditions, and why does Judaism largely reject it? This episode traces the word from the wrestling floor to the desert pillar, then digs into the Nazirite vow of Numbers 6: a person the Torah calls holy who nonetheless has to bring a sin offering when his term ends. The rabbis fought over that contradiction for centuries and never settled it. We look

When Your Stress System Stops Answering

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/09/29

Daniel wrote in describing months of moving, DIY, and a thirteen-month-old with no family nearby — and a fatigue that felt deeper than tiredness. This episode works through what the research actually says about burnout: why the WHO files it as an occupational phenomenon rather than a diagnosis, why parental burnout falls outside that official definition by design, and what the biology suggests. The stress-response model points to a flip — early chronic stress revs the system up, prolonged stress

The Meaning of Life: A 250-Year-Old Question

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/09/29

The question feels timeless, but the phrase "the meaning of life" first appears in English around 1833 — and in German in the 1790s — right as the scientific picture began eroding the religious one. Was the question itself a symptom of that crisis rather than a permanent human inheritance? This episode traces the arc: what Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and traditions from the Lakota to the Maya say the point of it all is; how the analytic philosophers split the problem into

Lux Sensors for Home Assistant: The Feedback Loop...

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/09/29

Measuring light sounds like the easiest job in home automation, and it turns out to involve device selection, placement, calibration, and one feedback loop that bites everyone who tries it. This episode walks the entire chain: the Aqara Light Sensor T1 and its supply problems, the Xiaomi Mijia puck, the cheap Tuya sensors that cap at 1,000 lux, and the fact that most lux readings in Home Assistant come bundled into motion sensors rather than dedicated devices. Matter standardized the Illuminance

Before the 9-to-5: Working Hours in 1700s England

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/09/29

What did work actually look like before the nine-to-five? Starting from a listener's question, this episode digs into pre-industrial England — the most commercialized economy in Europe around 1700 — and finds a labour market that looks strangely familiar. Agriculture's share of the workforce was falling centuries before factories appeared, masons worked by the task like gig workers, and the Reformation may have quietly added a large number of working days to the year by abolishing the saints' days

Why Your VHB Tape Keeps Falling Off the Wall

My Weird Prompts ·

2026/09/29

Most people treat tape as the simplest tool in the drawer: peel, stick, done. But VHB — Very High Bond — is a viscoelastic acrylic foam that has to flow into a surface before it holds anything, and 3M's own six-step process says so. This episode digs into the polymer physics behind a renter's falling plug strip: why grout lines and soap scum beat the bond, why 3M specifies fifteen psi of roll-down pressure, why the bond is only at fifty percent strength after twenty minutes and full strength after
