Matt Buckley was a teacher and a coach. He is a writer, poet, realtor and a cowboy. He was also one of the great Mining City athletes in his day. Buckley was part of Butte Central's back-to-back-to-back title run in football from 1971 through 1973. He received postseason honors on both sides of the ball at Carroll College. Ray Jay Johnson and Steve Schulte have been best friends since they were kids. They were also standouts playing for the Butte Central Maroons. Schulte is still BC's all-time leading rusher, and he is the only player to return the opening kickoff for a touchdown in the Butte High-Butte Central rivalry. Both were part of the 1978 Butte Central Class A State championship basketball team. While Schulte went to Carroll College to play football, Johnson played hoops at the College of Great Falls. He

Before he became a well-known sports official in Montana and well beyond, Glen Welch was an outstanding athlete at Butte High School and the University of Montana. The speedy All-State receiver helped lead the Bulldogs to back-to-back State titles in 1967 and 1968. He was then part of a back-to-back conference championship team with the Grizzlies.
