Chucky Queers: S03E01 "Murder at 1600"

Horror Queers ·

2023/10/05

With a new season of Don Mancini's Chucky, we're back on the recap beat. S03 kicks off with a mostly White House-set episode that introduces President Devon Sawa (and Lara Jean Chorostecki as the First Lady!) with only brief moments with our trio of kids (who are all social media stars now?) It's tough to guess where we're going, but we're anticipating The Omen III, pay-off on the dead sibling storyline, and a trip to the Capitol for Devon, Lexy, and a suddenly beefy Jake. Questions? Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Horror Queers ·

2023/10/04

Watch your head because we're kicking off spooky season (and our 250th episode!) with a look at Tim Burton's extremely Halloween-y classic Sleepy Hollow (1999)! From Johnny Depp's effeminate interpretation of Ichabod Crane to Miranda Richardson's devilishly campy climactic performance, this movie has it all! Join us as we praise, well, pretty much everything about Tim Burton's ode to Hammer Horror (and Disney's animated version of the story). But hey, the movie kills a kid! Plus: Elfman's score, bad

Stranger by the Lake (2013)

Horror Queers ·

2023/09/27

We're wrapping up Erotic Thriller month with the gayest text of all: French writer/director Alain Guiraudie's Stranger by the Lake (2013). This is one of Joe's favorite queer horror texts because it covers so many topics: cruising, sex and death, voyeurism, body image, gay microcosms, STIs, toxic relationship, homophobia, and gay friendships. And that's before we tackle the unsimulated sex, discuss using condoms for blowjobs, debate the ambiguous ending(s), and cringe over pervy Eric. Plus: finding

Micro Queers: My Animal (2023)

Horror Queers ·

2023/09/22

Put on a coat and get home before midnight because we're discussing Jacqueline Castel's lesbian werewolf romance My Animal (2023). Join us as we sing the praises of Castel's eye for aesthetics and Bobbi Salvör Menuez's lead performance, while lamenting the film's extended runtime and muted payoff. Still, there's enough here to earn a (slight) recommendation, as it features another solid performance from Bodies Bodies Bodies' Amandla Stenberg. Questions? Comments? Snark? Get ready for a world of wet because we're continuing our month of erotic thrillers with a look at the Wachowski sisters' 1996 ovinal queer classic Bound! Tagging in for the conversation is the founder of Salem Horror Fest: Kay Lynch! Join us as we kick things off with a brief discussion on the differences between noir and neo-noir before going all in on the casting drama that nearly cost us Jennifer Tilly! Then it's all (and we mean all) fair game as we analyze this masterpiece of queer

Micro Queers: The Latent Image (2022)

Horror Queers ·

2023/09/18

Grab your camera and retreat to a cabin in the woods because we're discussing the feature version of Alexander McGregor Birrell's The Latent Image (2022). This is quite similar to the short of the same name, with a few tweaks and a boyfriend for lead Ben (Joshua Tonks, guest on our BtVS episode "Once More, With Feeling). But while we're big fans of most of the technical elements (direction, acting, lighting, and set design), Trace struggles with the over-reliance on dream

Raid the closet for tear-away suits and make a "real" martini because we're talking about Paul Feig's suburban noir, A Simple Favor (2018). Joining us is Dread Central writer and We Really Like Her co-host Emily Gagne, who needed a second screening of the film to warm to its bisexual charms. Up for discussion: "pretty" girls Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, shockingly casual incest, Henry Golding's career as a side piece, why this film qualifies as an Erotic Thriller, and *lots* of tangents about

Dressed to Kill (1980) feat. Elizabeth Purchell

Horror Queers ·

2023/09/06

Grab your blonde wig, sunglasses and straight razor because we're kicking off a month of erotic thrillers with the grandaddy of them all: Brian De Palma's 1980 masterpiece Dressed to Kill! Joining us for the conversation is Austin-based queer film historian Elizabeth Purchell! Join us as we trace the film's journey from the mind of De Palma to a protested and picketed controversy among feminists and members of the queer community. It's a film that's all style and some substance, but we'd be remiss

Get ready to play the piano all sexy like because we're discussing Park Chan-wook's English-language debut Stoker, which is based on a screenplay from queer screenwriter (and actor) Wentworth Miller(?!?!). Join us as we discuss the film's journey from a Black List pick to a botched marketing campaign to an even more botched release. This is a shame, because Stoker is a film that oozes so much style that it elevates its baby Dexter plot, even if it could have used about 100% more Nicole Kidman. Plus:

Return to camp with Michael A. Simpson's Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Campers (1988) which finds Angela killing according to Aunt Martha's conservative moral code. We're talking about Pamela Springsteen's performance (and Felissa Rose's absence), our love of Ally, and the film's status as a self-referential horror comedy.
