Elvis Presley - One Night

One of Elvis' more rocking tunes, One Night (With You), was a hit for the singer in 1957. Written by Dave Bartholomew, Pearl King, and Anita Steinman, it was an R&B hit for Smiley Lewis in 1956. Elvis took the original lyrics, made a few small but weighty changes, and the rest is history. His rendition was a staple of his shows from that point on and one of the best recorded versions is from the 68 Comeback Special.

1986 was a very good year for Memphis music. You could hear a different AMAZING band just about every night in a local club. Good Question was undoubtedly one of those bands. While a part of Memphis will remember "Jane" my favorite track off of their 1986 Thin Disguise album is Catcher in the Rain. From the catchy chorus to the solid production, it's one of my all time favorite songs. Find the album online and buy it, you will not be disappointed.

In our second of a four part series on Memphis music, we put the spotlight on John Kilzer. John first came to the attention of the Memphis public, at least the sporting public, as a Memphis Tiger, playing on the basketball team. After a stint as an English teacher he decided music was the path forward for him. And bot, are we glad he did. Memory In The Making, both the song and album, were incredibly well done. We miss John but hopefully this song will bring back a memory for you.

Kevin Paige - Anything I Want

Kevin Paige's debut album released in 1989 spawned two top 40 hits and Anything I Want was one of them. This artist really needs no introduction. Glen Campbell was part of the Wrecking Crew, part time Beach Boy and host of one of the best 70's variety shows, the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. His list of hits spans decades. This song, Walls, was off of his Live From The Troubadour release, which when released in 2021 was 4 years after his death. Pull up an easy chair and reacquaint yourself with a real troubadour.

Our pick for this episode comes from the Jayhawks' 1995 album From The Green Grass. The song is Blue. If George Harrison had been into Americana music he could have written this song. Pop sensibilities along with a catchy chorus, smart lyrics, and layered vocals makes for a memorable tune. As soon as you hear the song you'll swear you've heard it before but can't remember where.
