You Have Seen Too Much.

I recorded this episode on Easter Sunday, in our living room here in France, right after a bike ride. There was one thought that kept coming back, and it wouldn’t leave me alone: I see too many photographers waiting.Waiting for more clarity. For someone to confirm they’re on the right track. Until they feel “ready.” At the same time, I see others who skip that part entirely and just begin, who commit without guarantees because they feel it matters. That difference fascinates me. And it runs through

Dat verschil fascineert me.

In December, I sat down in New York with Mark Mahaney, a photographer working for Time, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. What stayed with me from that conversation had little to do with only his images. It was about how you work. How you choose. How you show up in your practice. In this episode, I take you through three insights that stayed with me.About why assisting is still one of the fastest ways to grow.About why becoming better at photography doesn’t automatically move you forward as a

In this episode of the De Donkere Kamer Podcast, I sit down with Paul Moakley, executive producer at The New Yorker and former editor at large at Time Magazine. We talk about photography as a way of recording history, and about that thin line between documenting and interpreting the world. Paul shares how he approached portrait commissions at Time, what makes an image carry weight over time, and why the still image remains at the core of everything visual, even in film.We move into his current work

Last Sunday, I stepped into something new. A live podcast conversation with author Peter Terrin, invited by De Bezige Bij publishing house. And something stayed with me after that conversation: we no longer look at creatives as just one thing. We're not just writers nor photographers. We look at the full field around someone. How they think, create and how they show up. And that shift is happening in photography too. In this episode, I take you inside that reflection. What I see changing and also

#256 DUTCH - Hier lopen de meeste fotografen vast

De Donkere Kamer ·

2026/03/27

#254 ENGLISH - Busy, but going nowhere, is that you?

De Donkere Kamer ·

2026/03/23

I’ve been noticing this more and more. Photographers working hard. Staying busy. And still feeling like nothing really moves. So we assume the problem is the work. That we need to improve, do more, push harder. But most of the time… that’s not where it sits.In this episode, I talk about what’s underneath that feeling. Why things feel heavier today and why clarity in how you position yourself is becoming non-negotiable because the landscape has shifted. Fast. And if you keep showing up the same way,

#252 ENGLISH - How long are you going to wait?

De Donkere Kamer ·

2026/03/18

A lot of photographers stay stuck in the same place for longer than they’d like to admit. You feel there’s more in your work, you know you’re ready for a next step but you keep waiting. For clarity, you wait for confidence or for the right moment. In this episode, I take you into a moment from my own process.A live podcast. On a stage.Everything in me said: this is too much. And I still did it.I didn't feel ready, but it was aligned with where I want to go.Because clarity doesn’t come before

In this episode, I’m in conversation with photographer and filmmaker Sebastiano Tomada in New York city. We move from his early days in the fashion world in New York to his work in conflict zones like Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq. About how curiosity led him there, what he found, and how that period shaped him, both as a maker and as a person. We also talk about what came after. His transition into filmmaking. Working with commercial clients. Staying creative within constraints. And how he looks at

In this episode I’m recording from our house in France. I’m sitting in my office, looking outside as the first signs of spring slowly start to appear. At first it seems like nothing is happening, yet underneath the surface everything is quietly beginning to move.Growth in photography and entrepreneurship often works the same way. Many photographers want more freedom, more income, or more recognition for their work. At the same time, doubt and fear often get in the way. Before their real plan even has
