如意金箍棒書中說原是大禹治水時遺下的天河定底神珍鐵，為太上老君所製，放在東海。金箍棒兩頭是兩個金箍，中間是一段烏鐵；緊挨箍有鐫成的一行字：「如意金箍棒，重一萬三千五百斤」。在平常所見的各種金箍棒的形象是一頭各有一段黃色，中間為紅色的棍子。根據《西遊記》的記載，孫悟空去東海龍王處索討兵器時得到金箍棒，金箍棒似乎註定就是孫悟空的。書中第三回說道：「我們這海藏中，那一塊天河底的神珍鐵，那幾日霞光艷艷、瑞氣騰騰，敢莫是該出現，遇此聖也？」龍王引導至海藏中間，忽見金光萬道；龍王指定道：「那放光的便是。」最初作為定海神珍的金箍棒「乃是一根鐵柱子，約有斗來粗，兩丈有餘長」。西遊記原文為定海神珍，珍為珍珠的珍, ，現多稱為定海神針，針線的針。孫悟空得到後，能隨心意隨意變化大小，而且似乎它只聽孫悟空的，在書中金箍棒被奪走多次，但是沒有任何神仙或者妖怪能夠讓它隨意變化大小。平時孫悟空將金箍棒變成繡花針大小，藏在耳內，遇到敵時，從耳內取出，馬上變成碗口粗細的一根鐵棒。它還能隨身體大小變化而按比例改變大小，孫悟空變成昆蟲，金箍棒同樣還是能藏在耳內，而不會無法隨身攜帶。這也是取名「如意」金箍棒的含義。
