A lot of the archival primary sources I’m interested in reading for my research projects are available as microfilms that I can get via Interlibrary Loan. I got an inexpensive film scanner that has equivalent resolution to the ones most universities have that cost thousands of dollars more. That’s how fast technology has advanced! The things that stood out to me were more about the social importance of reading rather than the research technologies and data collected. There was a profound anxiety that an American public that wasn't literate would not be up to the challenges of the 20th century.
