#247 ENGLISH - Are you photographing to win. Or just...

De Donkere Kamer ·

2026/03/06

We like to think we make rational decisions in our work. About clients, money, about which projects to accept or refuse. But when I look at the conversations I have with photographers every week, I see something else. Many of those decisions are not rational at all. They are driven by something underneath. And that somethinh is scarcity or trust. In this episode I talk about a pattern I see all the time in photography businesses: staying too long with the wrong clients, spending huge amounts of time on

What happens when you stop “capturing” a portrait and start treating it as an exchange? In this episode I sit down with Delphine Diallo, Brooklyn-based artist and photographer (French and Senegalese roots), known for a visual language that turns the women around her into something unapologetically powerful, sometimes even divine. We recorded this conversation in my tiny hotel room in New York, which feels fitting, because New York is where Delphine found something she didn’t find in Europe: space to

What if your biggest block isn’t your technique, not the market, not even your talent, but the way you show up in your own life and business? In this episode, I take you into a period where my energy was low and I was forced to slow down. That pause brought clarity. About priorities. About leadership. And about the patterns I keep seeing in photographers who say they want to grow, yet keep sabotaging themselves along the way.I talk about a photographer who disappeared after an intense conversation

#242 ENGLISH - A lesson about space I needed myself

De Donkere Kamer ·

2026/02/20

I drove to Alkmaar, to a place where you wouldn’t necessarily expect anything special. Just an industrial area, but what stayed with me wasn’t the location, but the conversation, about creativity and getting stuck. And about something we often misunderstand. We sometimes believe that once you’ve “made it,” ideas just keep flowing. That success guarantees inspiration. It doesn’t. Even photographers who work internationally, publish books, and have full calendars get stuck. The difference is that they

De Donkere Kamer ·

2026/02/20

2026/02/17

Bruce Gilden is one of those photographers people think they’ve already understood. The flash. The closeness. The confrontation. But when you actually sit down with him, you realize the real story runs much deeper.I visited Bruce at his home in Beacon, just outside New York, and we spoke about what it takes to keep your edge for more than sixty years. About how New York changed. About why he moved from photographing the heartbeat of the city to the heartbeat of the individual. And about why distance

Over AI.

Over kernwaarden.

In this episode I’m speaking to you from Patagonia, a place where you don’t only arrive physically, but also internally. A place that, quietly and steadily, is teaching me something very simple and very profound: to slow down. To soften. To loosen my grip.I share my two words of the year: calmness and beauty. Not as concepts, but as lived experiences. As directions I’m consciously moving toward. And as qualities that are slowly reshaping how I work, how I create, how I relate, and how I run my

In this bonus episode, Mark Mahaney steps away from his professional identity. No photography talk, no career narratives, no achievements to frame the conversation. Instead, five unexpected questions open a quieter door into how he thinks, feels, and moves through his inner world.Mark speaks about his deep love for doing nothing — truly nothing — sitting in silence, watching a river, listening to birds. De Donkere Kamer ·

2026/01/16

In this episode, I’m recording from a remote estancia in Patagonia, Argentina, a place where distance is real, infrastructure is minimal, and the internet disappears whenever the wind decides so. There is no backup connection, no quick fix, no way to keep pushing when things stop. That’s where this episode begins.I talk about what happens when you’re forced to pause. Not as a luxury, not as a retreat, but as a working condition. About the discomfort of not knowing what the next step is. About how
