Worst Collection Ever

Shawn Marek & Jen Stansfield

WORST COLLECTION EVER is a comic book podcast where Jen and Shawn poke fun at their own collection of random comic books with loads of crass sincerity and scattershot nostalgia. None of the books in the collection offer anything close to quality or financial worth but our love for all of it is as real as it gets.If you want to follow along, we like to read the books in sequential order as to track the lunacy in real time!Email the podcast and talk to the hosts at

DIAL H FOR HERO from Superboy #39 (1983)Something a bit different this week as we revisit a backup story from Superboy [vol 2] featuring the Dial H For Hero crew! The Dial H stuff is pretty boring and lame to be honest but there’s some fun stuff to talk about. We got lead boy Chris’s dad living in an Al Bundy simulacrum, Turkish cigarette preferences, larceny and ill-advised attempts at bus magic. *** PROPER COMIC BOOK DISCUSSION STARTS AT 00:02:03 *** Promo: #JSAPRIL

Defenders #45 (1977)It’s a Defenders Gender Battle as the Red Rajah saga comes to close! Doctor Strange, all red-gemmed up as the Red Rajah, wants mankind as his universal think tank and he’s starting with Manhattan. He’s got the boy Defenders under his control so its up to the girl Defenders to save NYC (and humanity pretty much). Also, Red Guardian goes full Gwen Stefani with her outfit, Hellcat and Valkyrie dish about communism, the Hulk rocks out to Pearl Jam and the Marvel editors shout

Defenders #44 (1977)Man, the Incredible Hulk can be an incredible pain in the ass sometimes. Unbeknownst to them, Doctor Strange is now the Red Rajah, an entity focused on bringing Manhattan together as one big think tank whether they want to or not! We also got Valkyrie’s ex-husband stumbling into the Sanctorum, Russia telling Red Guardian to get her ass back home and Patsy Walker aka

Defenders #43 (1977) The fun times keep rolling along for Marvel’s favorite non-team as the Cobalt Man’s about to explode and all the Hulk wants to do is punch the radioactive villain in the face. Thankfully, Knighthawk (who is still shirtless) has a better solution. We also have Egghead unleashing his lethal egg-based offense with surprisingly efficient results, Luke Cage yeeting an agitated George Lucas, Rhino busting out a pre-Nicholson THE SHINING bit and the debut of Dr. Strange as the

Taking a deviation in our Defenders coverage to bring you a [R]OHOTMU featuring one of the prominent villains, Solarr!Solarr, as discussed last week, is a mutant with the power to harness energy from the sun and use it for crime and other stuff. Plus, he’s gotten a few upgrades over the years thanks to Egghead. Oh, and he’s also died twice. His first death comes at the hands of El Segundo’s hottest new dad band, “Drew” Bres and the FOMO(R). His second demise involves the Goblin Queen but it’s not

Defenders #42 (1976)Oh man….the Defenders are back on WCE, baby! This is a wacky arc (as most Defenders books tend to feature) where Doctor Strange gets transfixed by a mystical ruby like he’s Kevin Garnett in UNCUT GEMS. He also gets super ageist towards his friend’s courier and skips out on the Defenders while they fend off Cobalt Man. We also got Egghead stealing an ENTIRE NASA space station, Nighthawk spontaneously combusting like he’s Brad Dourif or something and Hulk dressing up as an

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #32 (2024)It is the continuation of the Eclipso/Word’s Finest arc as the crap really hits the fan because both Superman AND Batman have been Eclipsified! The Watchtower is in pieces, Red Tornado’s all screwed up and the rest of the Justice League is trapped in a purple jewel in the middle of the Sahara. And the worst thing is that Eclipso now has Batman’s dark web password and wants Superman to use the Earth’s satellites as a pickleball court. Will Green

Captain America #320 (1986)We’ve reached the end of all this Scourge business — for now — as Cap gets his hands on *one* of the Scourges. This is all thanks to wearing a freshly-murdered man’s outfit and lying to the media. There’s also an old-fashioned origin story here for the Scourge involving classic Westerns and Mission: Impossible masks. Plus, we have some comments on all the conveniently-placed mattresses in this issue, Water Wizard’s thigh high boots, the return of crop-tops for men

There’s a bit of a hiccup in our schedule so it’s time for another round of [R]OHOTMU but at least it fits in with the current Captain America story we are working with. This week, we find out what the deal is with professional wrestler/super-villain LETHA. As it turns out, Letha broke into the business via a sort of Fabulous Moolah operation and ends up in Rikers because of some mark fan at Roxxon using her to rough up Project Pegasus. After that, she has to contend with Dazzler while in the

Captain America #318 (1986) It’s true — we have now entered Captain America’s Guy Fieri phase as he travels the USA, not for “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” but more “Diners, Drive-Ins and CRIMES!” He’s putzing around in a windowless van like he’s in BLACK PHONE or something, showing off his Wakandan road technology. He runs into Blue Streak, the roller-skate based villain that goes it alone and changes outfits quicker than David Spade in that airplane bathroom in TOMMY BOY. Unfortunately

It is time for another [RANDOM] OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE segment as Shawn goes it solo to explain the history and general existence of an arbitrary Marvel Comics character (circa 1986). This week we see what the deal is with Marvel’s resident Jesus Christ cosplayer AQUARIAN! For some reason, Marvel decided to give this guy a carbon copy of Superman’s origin, exploding planets and what not. He’s also been adopted by Namorita, press-slammed Man-Thing and gotten up close and
