Cursed (2005) feat. Tim O'Leary

Horror Queers ·

2019/09/18

The Horror Queers eight-week camp marathon continues as Joe and Trace journey to Hollywood (barely escaping a car wreck on Mulholland Drive) to visit the hippest new night club since Planet Hollywood: Tinsel. That's right, they're discussing Wes Craven's Cursed! Joining them is Tim O'Leary, creator of the upcoming queer web series DEMONHUNTR! They will need all the help they can get to figure out just what this cobbled-together Frankenstein's monster of a film is trying to do. In what seems to be an

The Horror Queers are getting a head start on Friday the 13th celebrations with a visit to Crystal Lake in Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday! Joe and Trace are joined by fellow Bloody Disgusting columnist Alice Collins in an episode that might as well be called E! True Hollywood Story: Jason Goes to Hell. Together, they will try to do the impossible: make sense of a film that makes absolutely no sense. Topics up for discussion are little girls in pink dresses sticking a hot dog through a donut,

IT: Chapter One (2017) feat. Michael Roffman

Horror Queers ·

2019/09/04

In an episode almost as long as its source material, the boys kick off Stephen King week with a trip to Derry alongside resident expert Michael Roffman (Editor-In-Chief of Consequence of Sound and co-host of The Losers Club podcast). EVERYTHING is on the table: Coming of age narratives, bad CGI, the appeal of dancing clowns, as well as Derry and Pennywise as stand-ins for Reagan-era Conservatism. Also, a discussion of whether adults are the true villains, the most effective set pieces and an

The boys are having their first foursome as they discuss Sean Byrne's drill-happy 2009 film The Loved Ones with the hosts of Dirty Little Horror Podcast! Self-proclaimed Britney Spears enthusiast Charles Rockhill and resident Australian Christopher Downs crash Joe and Trace's party to weigh in on the film's queer icon (and completely cuckoo bananas psychopath), Lola (Robin McLeavy). Joe and Trace travel to Brazil to check in on expectant mother Ana and her nanny/housekeeper Clara in Marco Dutra and Juliana Rojas' dark fairytale festival fave. Trace finds a couple of surprisingly conservative readings regarding abortion and lesbianism in this pregnancy horror film. The pair discuss the film's critical reception and how that ties into the film's "two movies in one" structure, Joe tackles the film's subtle race critique and ribs Trace about the film's CGI and homage to

Tragedy Girls (2017) feat. Dani Ryan

Horror Queers ·

After so many months, the boys are ready to embrace facts: they are social media darlings and the world needs to know it! With Dani Ryan along for the ride, the trio "Like and Fave" Tyler MacIntyre's astute meta-comedy about two aspiring serial (or is it spree?) killers on the cusp of graduating high school with a body count. Horror Queers ·

Kiri Kiri Kiri! The boys are officially declaring August Femme Fatale Month, which means they'll be tackling a bunch of films with some killer ladies (aka Trace's favorite type of character)! First up is Asami Yamazaki in Takashi Miike's controversial 1999 film, Audition! That's right, it's another Japanese film, which means you can laugh along (or take a shot) every time Joe mispronounces a character's name! The boys fall through the 3D printer as they tackle their very first stop-motion animated family film. Thankfully they have help from Brenna Clarke Gray, the co-host of Joe's other podcast - Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr, which focuses on Young Adult literature adaptations. Brenna's vast range of experiences (English professor, mother, former voice actor, lover of Hilary Duff and hater of horror films) provides no shortage of amusing stories and anecdotes as the trio unpack the film. Joe and Trace traverse the spooky halls of Dark Castle Entertainment to discuss Jaume Collet-Serra's (The Shallows, House of Wax) creepy-kid movie Orphan! Joining them on their tour is Sade Sellers, one of the co-hosts of the Afro Horror Podcast! Her expertise on black horror cinema proves crucial when the boys analyze Sister Abigail (C.C.H. Pounder)'s brutal death by hammer! Other topics on the table includes the film's obscenely long 123-minute runtime, Trace's thoughts on Taissa Farmiga's acting

The boys are jumping across the pond this week to meet up with journalist David Opie to discuss the first season series of Britain's queer zombie show In the Flesh! Feeling intimidated be a whole season series of TV? Never fear! Because it's British, it's only three episodes long! And it's available on Amazon Prime and Hulu! Scream: Resurrection (2019)

Horror Queers ·

SPOILER ALERT: We are spoiling the entire six episodes, but as Joe says in the intro, it is SO BAD that we don't recommend anyone watch. Just listen to us instead. In this special episode, the boys swing by Atlanta to check the latest TV iteration of Ghostface and the Scream franchise. Alas the "Deadfast Club" proves to be as uninspired as their attempts at metatextuality. This series has virtually nothing to offer, only bad writing, bad acting, terrible pacing, and lacklustre kills. Plus: the

For the final entry in the Summer of Franchises, the boys grab Brian Particelli for a camping weekend at Black Lake. There they discover misogyny, bears and a profane Betty White…because they are firmly ensconced in a rom-com masquerading as a creature feature, written by none other than David E. Kelley. The boys attempt to break down the comedy to scares ratio (1:0), play the Hollywood spouse game (because Brian knows EVERYTHING) and Joe even tries out a few bad impersonations. Also on the menu: a

Hello Kiddies! The Horror Queers are joined by Tales from the Crypt expert Sarah-Tai Black to discuss the booby-filled 1995 banger Demon Knight! In what may be their most tangent-filled episode yet, they not only code Billy Zane's Collector as gay and Jada Pinkett's Jeryline (a name that no character pronounces the same way) as a "soft butch" lesbian, but they also proclaim the queer icon status of the Crypt Keeper! Trace tries to decipher the rules of the demons (they're so contradictory!)

It’s a maple leaf takeover! Just in time for Canada Day, Joe stacks the pod with both a Canadian film and a Canadian guest, Ariel Fisher, for another gang-up on Trace. The trio venture into the wilds of Toronto suburbia for a discussion of lycanthropy, the “horrors” of menstruation and how Katharine Isabelle can help facilitate the coming out process. Chris and Joe gang up on Trace in a heated argument about what constitutes the “Big” horror franchises; they discuss out and proud gay director Don Mancini’s role shepherding the franchise for 30+ years, and why Jennifer Tilly’s autobiography should be called “Gaslighting.” Also on the table: pronunciations of “Redman,” a
