Study Guide A braita presents opinions regarding an animal purchased from a non-Jew whose birthing history is unknown. Rabbi Yishmael establishes age-based presumptions (that a goat in its first year, a sheep in its second, and a cow or donkey in its third is assumed to have not yet produced a firstborn prior to the sale), while Rabbi Yosi bar Rabbi Yehuda requires four years for a donkey. Rabbi Yehoshua quotes his rabbis and counters that a bodily discharge (tinuf), which could indicate a prior

Perek י״ב: Fire and the First Laws of CarryingThis Perek opens with the two labors of fire: kindling even the smallest flame and extinguishing one, including when putting out a fire is permitted, such as to stop it from spreading. It then turns to an entirely new Melacha, Hotza'ah, the forbidden labor of carrying between domains, laying the foundation: what defines a private domain versus a public one, and the basic requirement of lifting an object in one domain and setting it down in

On today’s page, Bekhorot 20, Rabbi Yehoshua wastes no time correcting Rabbi Yishmael when his former student gets a point of halacha wrong. But years before that rebuke, Rabbi Yehoshua had encountered the young prodigy imprisoned in Rome, recognized his extraordinary potential, and paid a fortune to free him. What does it mean to care enough about a student to both invest everything in him and tell him when he’s wrong? Listen and find out.Learn more about your ad choices. Visit

A person is born completely deaf and cannot speak. Years later, a cochlear implant allows him to hear, speak, communicate and function completely normally. Is he still the חרש described by Chazal — or has he become a פיקח?Starting from the Gemara’s discussion of דעת in a חרש, we follow a fascinating debate from the Divrei Chaim and Maharam Shik to Rav Moshe Feinstein’s remarkable case of a deaf person who learned to hear and speak through technology — and then to the modern-day debate over cochlear

Why is the kiddushin of a cheresh fundamentally different from the kiddushin of a katan?Rav Elchonon Wasserman, in the Kovetz Shiurim, develops a powerful yesod in understanding the sugya. At first glance, both a cheresh and a katan lack the daas necessary for a regular kiddushin d’Oraisa. But Rav Elchonon shows that the two are not the same chesaron at all.By a cheresh, there is a certain level of daas and an actual maaseh kiddushin, but the daas is not strong enough for the Torah to give the

A rabbi told me he once heard a concept that made his tefillah so much better. He said, imagine a person, lo aleinu, lying in a hospital bed whose body suddenly could no longer perform its basic functions on its own. First, he could no longer breathe. Immediately, the doctors would have to put him on a ventilator, sending oxygen into his lungs to keep him alive. Then imagine his heart could no longer pump his blood properly. Now he would need another machine to circulate his blood for him. His

If a person went to sleep in the evening, and woke up for the day before Hasot (halachic midnight), must he wash Netilat Yadayim, and, if so, does he recite a Beracha over this washing? This can happen if a person's job requires working a nightshift, and so he sleeps in the early evening hours and wakes up before midnight. Another example is a person who sleeps for a few hours before Hasot on the night of Hoshana Rabba or Shabuot so he will be able to remain awake throughout the night. Rav Shneur
