In this aboutlogic: premises episode, Deniz and Thorsten explore the history, paradoxes, and philosophical debates behind set theory. From Cantor’s diagonal argument to Hilbert’s Hotel and the role of ZFC, they discuss why set theory became the language of mathematics—and where its

In this episode, Autumn and Noah talk with Kevin Hartnett about why mathematicians are willing to spend years reducing an idea to a level of detail a machine can check, whether formal verification can catch an AI that's technically correct but fundamentally misaligned, the cold-start problem that kept earlier theorem-provers niche, and what it means for the future of mathematical trust once AI can generate proofs faster than any human community can read them.Timeline:00:00 Introduction to Lean and

On the latest episode of "In the Interim…", Dr. Scott Berry provides an empirical examination of two recent JAMA trials: TRACK (low-dose rivaroxaban in advanced kidney disease) and VICTORY (IV vitamin C in severe burn injury). The TRACK trial lacked any pre-specified futility criteria, with a DSMB-initiated stop based on conditional power calculations. Scott argues that conditional power, especially in this interim context, is a poor, misleading tool—contrasting it against a Bayesian

Academia on the Line is a podcast where two mathematicians talk with academics about mathematics, STEM, and higher education. Episode Summary: OpenAI's recent disproof of Erdős' unit distance conjecture surprised much of the mathematics community and prompted many researchers to reconsider the capabilities of modern reasoning models. In our inaugural episode, Melanie Matchett Wood and Daniel Litt join us to discuss the mathematics behind the result, the nine-author companion paper writt...

The Final Synthesis — Technical BriefingPlanetary Scale (100M+ Nodes): The architecture is now production-ready to scale beyond the initial 10-million-node target toward a 100-million-node swarm. This is enabled by the logarithmic path-depth proxy model and the 224x memory reduction achieved through the Mohawk Protocol’s chunked streaming aggregation. The Paradox of the Sovereign Protocol Revisited: We conclude by examining the protocol’s core tension—the need for a system to be decentralized enough

Text us your thoughts! In our last Hot Seat, our guests challenged the idea that everyone is a math person. Has the idea gone too far? And in today’s Hot Seat, we’re following  up on this idea with a subtle but powerful shift in language—and mindset. What if we had a word other than mathematician or math person? Join us as our Hot Seat guest invites us to rethink not just what we call our students, but how those words shape their relationship with mathematics, as our guest argues: We are all born

aboutlogic #14 | Turing Award winner Dana Scott joins us to discuss his groundbreaking work on lambda calculus, forcing, and Boolean-valued models and how these ideas revolutionized set theory and computability. From his collaborations with Kleene and Solovay to his thoughts on constructive mathematics, Scott shares insights into the history and future of logical foundations. Hear anecdotes about Gödel’s unpublished ideas, Einstein’s influence, and the telephone conversations that shaped modern

How do we connect what students learn in the classroom with what STEM looks like in the real world? We explore the CSIRO’s STEM Professionals in Schools program with Martin Jellinek, unpacking how the program helps bridge the gap between classroom teaching and STEM industry practice. We discuss the program’s structure, the flexible supports available to schools, and the powerful role that STEM role models can play in engaging students in STEM pathways. Martin also highlights the rich

In this episode of "In the Interim…", Dr. Scott Berry and Dr. Kert Viele examine response-adaptive randomization (RAR) in clinical trials, dissecting its statistical rationale, common criticisms, and implementation challenges. Drawing on extensive experience with trials such as BAN2401 (lecanemab), ICECAP, dulaglutide seamless Phase 2/3, I-SPY2, REMAP-CAP, PROSPECT, and the historical ECMO trial, they discuss the scientific advantages and disadvantages and ethical impact. RAR reallocates
