In the Bandiagara region of Mali, Dogon communities maintain rich and varied religious traditions shaped by ritual, oral teaching, history, and centuries of cultural exchange. In 1950, French ethnologists Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen published an account of Sirius-related teachings they attributed to four named Dogon informants: Ongnonlou Dolo, Innekouzou Dolo, Yébéné, and Manda.Their report described a Sirius-associated object that appeared small, heavy, difficult to see, and linked to a

For example, it should be impossible to distinguish our universe from one that is that is the perfect mirror opposite in charge, handedness, and the direction of time. But

Today's episode spotlights Ref Bari, a Brown University physics student who I think is a future leader to watch. He's already quite a leader at the university level, having herded the necessary cats to develop and submit a NIAC proposal! This is tough enough from a NASA center where these things happen routinely, but Ref made it happen as a student at a University where advanced space mission concepts are not an everyday thing. We talk about how he achieved that, navigating various team,

You’ve probably heard that **we’re made of stardust**. But what does that actually mean, and which parts of us really came from stars? In this episode of *Cosmic Fossils*, we go inside a massive star and follow its life all the way to the end: from hydrogen and helium burning, through the creation of carbon and heavier elements, to the iron core that ultimately triggers its collapse. We’ll talk about the famous **B²FH paper**, Margaret Burbidge and the origins of stellar nucleosynthesis, the Hoyle

A German rocket lifted off from an Arctic island on Saturday and became the first vehicle ever to reach orbit from Western European soil. Plus: the gaps in stellar streams may not be dark matter after all, two white dwarfs circling every 374 seconds in the far southern sky, peptides that fold in concentrated sulfuric acid, and what Katalyst's LINK is actually doing next to Swift. Both-hemispheres skywatch, and a serious safety warning for tomorrow's daylight Jupiter occultation. Links &

After an eight-year journey across billions of kilometers, BepiColombo is entering its final approach to Mercury. The mission has completed a crucial autonomous maneuver and is preparing to place two spacecraft around the mysterious planet later in 2026.Their observations could reveal new clues about Mercury’s magnetic field, enormous iron core, and the origins of rocky planets.Thank you for listening to Bedtime Astronomy — your guide to the cosmos. New episodes on space exploration, NASA missions

Could the Milky Way itself be creating clues that look like dark matter?A new study suggests that gaps and distortions in stellar streams may sometimes arise from the galaxy's own complex gravitational structure. The findings could force astronomers to rethink how they search for the hidden fingerprints of dark matter.Thank you for listening to Bedtime Astronomy — your guide to the cosmos. September 13 - 19: MAKE IT STICK We begin this week with a waxing Moon who joins Mercury in Virgo, finishing out the Mercury themed last week where we pulled together our resources and strength. There will be a few more days of the planets forming a chain by occupying adjacent signs, giving last week a feeling of flow and momentum. While things will keep flowing this week, the underlying shift is toward commitment to deep change. That momentum keeps clicking with strong Mercury placed in ...

Finally, two powerful and independent methods have refined its measurement to

A mysterious gamma-ray signal from distant galaxy clusters may be offering one of the strongest clues yet to the nature of dark matter.Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences found a distinct energy spike consistent with predictions for WIMPs, while struggling to explain it through conventional astrophysical sources or instrumental effects.Although the signal still needs confirmation, its unusual characteristics could point researchers toward the long-sought invisible matter dominating the

Earth’s magnetic shield may be far less protective against extreme solar storms than scientists once thought. New research suggests that even the most powerful events could continue to produce increasingly intense effects, potentially threatening satellites, power grids, and global infrastructure.Thank you for listening to Bedtime Astronomy — your guide to the cosmos. Galaxies carry the evidence of their past. When the Milky Way captures a dwarf galaxy or tears apart a globular cluster, it leaves behind long, ghostly ribbons of stars called stellar streams. These streams preserve the history of ancient collisions, and their shapes may trace the invisible dark matter surrounding a galaxy. This week, we follow the stellar wreckage left behind by galactic cannibalism, from the enormous Sagittarius stream wrapped around the Milky Way to Oyashio, the first suspected

Why does the planet Mercury exist? How did it form? Why does it behave so strangely? What is the "message" of our solar system's furthest interior orb?  What is a spin-orbit resonance and how did it come about? On part one of our September episode of Good Heavens! Wayne and Dan explore some of the wonders and mysteries of the messenger planet. Come and see!
