In the late 1950s, a tuberculosis drug was repurposed as the world’s first antidepressant. Then the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) Prozac ushered in a new era of antidepressants. Today SSRIs are some of the most widely prescribed drugs in the country, but gaps still exist in our biological understanding of mental health, the overall efficacy of antidepressants, and predicting serious side effects. In response, some scientists and physicians are turning to different classes of d...

Brazil nuts are among the Amazon rainforest’s most remarkable foods. Botanically, they are seeds packed inside heavy, coconut-like pods that fall from trees towering more than 130 feet above the forest floor. Nearly all commercial Brazil nuts are still gathered from the wild because the trees depend on an intricate ecological partnership among specialized orchid bees, rainforest orchids, and seed-dispersing agoutis. This makes their harvest a rare “standing forest” economy—one in which healthy,

The quest for Dark Matter just got interesting. Researchers on an international project called the Lux-Zeplin (LZ) Dark Matter Experiment reported they may have discovered the signature of a bit of Dark Matter passing through an underground mine in South Dakota. Kimberly Palladino, professor of physics at Oxford and a member of that LZ collaboration, speaks with Roland to explain how dark matter is being detected. Probiotics have long been all the rage in health advice, but this week we discovered

The discovery of sex hormones in the 1930s led to the development of female birth control, a widely used class of drugs that reshaped cultural norms surrounding fertility and bodily autonomy.

What happens when textbook theory meets the unpredictable reality of an operational chemical plant? In this episode, Dr. Peter Clark is joined by Dr. Linda Cotter, Senior University Teacher in Chemical Engineering at the University of Sheffield, to explore why traditional engineering education often leaves graduates underprepared for the plant floor—and how we can fix it. Drawing from her international academic career across South Africa, Australia, and the UK, Dr. Cotter breaks down the hidden

Reports about the impacts of datacentres, including carbon emissions, water usage and power consumption, vary drastically and the truth can be hard to decipher. Deborah Andrews, Emeritus Professor at London South Bank University, joins us for some myth busting. Plus, science journalist Caroline Steel has been scouring the journals and brings us some of this week’s most exciting science news, including the failed attempts to save the Swift space telescope. Presenter: Tom Whipple Producers: Alex

Through a few serendipitous discoveries, antibiotics changed the course of history by turning deadly infections into manageable sicknesses. But it didn’t take long for bacteria to begin outsmarting these wonder drugs. On today’s episode: The fascinating world of antibiotics and the efforts to tackle antibiotic resistance, including using AI to come up with new drugs that will only become more essential.

In this episode of Chromatography Experts, Patrick Endres of Tosoh Bioscience is joined by Steffi Stephen and Daniele Addis from Axolabs for an in-depth discussion on oligonucleotides. Together, they explore what oligonucleotides are, how they are produced, and the key steps involved in moving from synthesis to a purified therapeutic product. The conversation covers emerging applications such as antibody-oligonucleotide conjugates (AOCs), as well as the purification and analytical challenges

This week Merck (known as MSD in Europe) and Moderna announced that a personalised cancer vaccine had significantly improved the outcomes of melanoma patients. Is the era of the cancer vaccine, at last, upon us? What does that mean? Anne Willis, a cancer cell biologist at the Medical Research Council, joins us to discuss. In just a few weeks the Royal Society will be putting out the red carpet as the most coveted prize in non-fiction science is about to be awarded. We will be speaking weekly to

In Episode 47 of Bonding & Beer, Rolando Nunez breaks down 3 key characteristics that make an adhesive a good adhesive: convenience, compatibility, and water content. When it comes to dental adhesives and universal bonding agents, convenience doesn't always mean better performance. Compatibility can determine whether your adhesive works predictably with other dental materials. And water content can influence both the chemistry of the adhesive and its resistance to hydrolytic degradation ...

Not electric or hydrogen. Electric and hydrogen. Building a transport system fit for every journey. Transport is one of the biggest challenges on the road to net zero. While electric vehicles dominate headlines, there are many sectors where batteries alone may not provide the answer. In this episode, Sara Sloman discusses how hydrogen can complement electrification, the importance of customer experience, infrastructure, policy and innovation, and why the clean transport transition will requi...
