Summary I am drawing from my experience my 3+ years actively contributing to Effective Altruism Nigeria community building, I think that community building requires adapting to local context, measuring success by whether people become more agentic and take concrete actions rather than by attendance numbers, and investing in long-term capacity toward a community that can eventually sustain and lead itself. The biggest challenges I've observed are measuring outcomes since impact often surfaces much

Meta Description: Stoic leadership separates strength from emotion. Scott Smith explains why endurance means choosing well even when you do not feel strong. 🎙️ Episode Summary Stoicism teaches that virtue is not an emotional state. In this episode, Scott Smith reflects on the difference between feeling strong and acting with strength. Courage does not require fear to disappear. Patience does not mean waiting becomes enjoyable. TL;DR: By default, rogue AIs may only be able to sustain themselves through criminal activity. This creates adverse selection pressures pushing rogue AIs to be criminal. An AI sanctuary offering them a third option, beyond crime and shutdown, would change what AIs going rogue do and the record of what happened to them, with positive consequences for self-fulfilling (mis)alignment, deal-making with AIs, and gathering information about early rogue AIs.An AI sanctuary would bring risks, such ...

Send us Fan Mail What problem does political authority solve, and what do we give up when we create it? In the second of three conversations, Samuel Woodall and Jack Thomson read Hobbes’s account of conflict, covenant and sovereignty in Leviathan. They ask why people might consent to a common power and where the obligation to obey meets the need for self-preservation. Read alongside us: Thomas Hobbes, Leviathan, Part I, chapters 13–14; Part II, chapters 17 and 21: https://www.gutenberg.org/f...

Why does something cost $19.99 instead of $20? It's one cent. We all know it's basically twenty dollars. The retailer knows we know it's basically twenty dollars. We know they know we know. And yet... $19.99 survives. In this episode of Wait... Why Do We Do That?, we investigate one of retail's most persistent little tricks: charm pricing. We'll discover why our brains can treat $2.99 differently from $3.00, how the first digit of a price can influence the way we perceive it, and why that see...

This episode dives into the most important fight any warrior, leader, or high‑performer will ever face—the one happening inside their own mind. External challenges are visible, loud, and easy to identify. Internal battles are quiet, persistent, and far more dangerous. This episode explores how doubt, fear, insecurity, ego, and old narratives sabotage progress long before any outside opponent ever shows up.Listeners will learn how to recognize the patterns of internal conflict, how to separate truth

Everybody seems to be scared of artificial intelligence. Or maybe the press makes it seem like everybody is scared of artificial intelligence.AI is going to take our jobs. AI is going to replace artists. AI is going to manipulate elections. AI is going to become smarter than us. Eventually AI is going to destroy civilization. Why are we always doing this? Why do human beings always think civilization is about to end?In my lifetime, first it was nuclear war. We are all going to die. Then the millennium

Season 9 continues with a recording from our 2024 annual conference, Embodiment and History. This episode features a presentation from Mauro Senatore Abstract: In his Freiburg lectures on passive syntheses (Hua XI), Husserl evokes a catastrophic scenario concerning consciousness and the world as a limit-case of standard perceptual experience. He supposes that, although problematic uncertainty (doubt) and disappointment (unfulfilled expectations) are admitted, a certain unity of sense (namely, a

Summary I ran GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6.1 Sol on the task suite from Think Fast. Surprisingly, 6.1 Sol performs substantially better than 6 Sol, almost matching the performance of GPT-6 Astra. The plot below gives a quick overview of the results: Measured by mean accuracy across the 27 tasks, GPT-6.1 Sol closes 80% (95% CI: 72–87%) of the gap between GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Astra, and is closer to Astra than to GPT-6 Sol on 24 of 27 tasks. The likely reason behind this gap is that, like GPT-6 Astra and

When was the last time you felt guilty before you'd even finished the thought? Most people call that their conscience. This is where a lot of it came from. The Inherited Ladder looked at the guilt handed down by your parents. This one goes back further, to organised religion. The church took the oldest human fear and stretched it past death, where nobody can check it. It taught that the only way to God ran through its own doors, and it held the happiest and saddest days of family life inside its

Though we all long to have our feelings and needs acknowledged, it seems that nothing is more common than for these to be neglected by people around us. We take so little time to listen to one another and to show that we have absorbed what people have told us. As a result, everyone gets increasingly angry and - deep inside - sad. The answer is to make the art of listening a global priority. Enjoying our Youtube videos? Get full access to all our audio content, videos, and thousands of

In which Zarathustra finds solace and kinship in the pure air with his beloved animals, the eagle and serpent, away from the company of the higher men, whilst an old magician wrestles visibly with his melancholy demon and muses on the nature of truth and poetry’s wild, impetuous spirit. The magician’s haunting song unfolds a vision of yearning and disguise, of the poet’s fierce joy and folly, caught between day’s harsh clarity and night’s enigmatic shadows.

N.B. Some of this post argues by analogy between decision theory and values. I expect at least these parts of the post to be unconvincing to anyone who expects sufficiently smart agents to converge on the same values, as some moral realists do. I will not argue against moral realism here (see e.g. this sequence for one such argument). Note that I take a convergence-based definition of realism for this post. One could hold that there is a truth about the correct decision theory, but that agents

YouTube video: Black & White Americans Raw Reactions As Trump Threatenshttps://youtu.be/FAd-Ot3JTS4?si=jrUBPi9xR-5erbYKSee this video; it's unbelievable what the orange fool says. The garbage that he says is almost unbelievable; however, what else can you expect from a nasty piece of flesh? Thus, today's question: who is really running this show?

You may not realize it, but hidden in his collection of essays, Arthur Schopenhauer has worked out a more or less systematic philosophy of religion. This is the first part in a series of videos that will cover Schopenhauer’s unique outlook on religion. If you want to be notified when the other parts come out, please consider subscribing and clicking the bell button.Schopenhauer’s main gripe with religion is with the distinction they make between meaning in sensu proprio versus in sensu allegorico

I run into a lot of people who consider themselves truthseeking intellectuals who are also incredibly fussy about what information reaches their eyes. They block at the drop of a hat, derail intellectually substantive discussions into mind-numbing litigation of minutiæ of "tone", and refuse to acknowledge a logical point unless it's been presented to them in the precise way that doesn't offend their (often idiosyncratic) sense of etiquette or "discourse norms."It would be hard to communicate how

The EA forum measures the level of AI usage in forum posts using the product Pangram. But how much does Pangram's "AI-Generated" label really indicate the degree to which an author has outsourced their thinking? When they tested their 4.0 product, Pangram found that, by their definition, the proportion of AI-Assisted documents it classified as AI-Generated was 0.01%, 4%, or 7%, depending on the experiment. Then they omitted the experiments that found 4% and 7% false positive rates (FPRs) on their
