Watch the DevotionBased on Ezekiel 18:30-32 About Face There he was, a grown man sitting in my office, and he was sobbing. He was a veteran of our nation’s military and was successful with his career. He was now serving as a civilian and was doing well there, too, but that day, he sat in my office sobbing. He said, “Pastor Horn, I am embarrassed. I’m ashamed to even be sitting here talking to you, but I don’t know who else to talk to because I’m just stuck. I have sinned and I

Watch the DevotionBased on Romans 9:19; Jonah 4:11 The Merciful God I don’t know about you but every time I read the story of Jonah in the Bible, I am amazed. It’s not so much that part where the giant fish swallows Jonah to preserve his life. . . And I apologize, if you’re totally lost right now. Go and read the book of Jonah before you continue reading this devotion. It’s only four chapters long. It really won’t take you long. Ok, now. . . what amazes me about that

Military Devotion – Remember – September 11, 2026

WELS Military Devotions ·

2026/09/11

Watch the DevotionRemember It’s at this time of year where we hear that word “remember” or the words “don’t forget,” and they immediately tie our minds and hearts to the awful events that happened 25 years ago. Those of us who are old enough remember exactly where we were and what we were doing and how we reacted when we first heard the awful news. There’s some of you who were (and still are) on active duty and cannot forget where you were or what you were doing because you

Deployment has been extended again? Embrace the suck. PCS orders have been delayed? Embrace the suck. Oh, our household goods won’t arrive on time and when they do some of them will be broken? Embrace the suck. Whether you are new to the military community or you’re counting down the days and weeks to retirement,

Military Devotion – Who is Jesus? – August 21, 2026

WELS Military Devotions ·

2026/08/21

Watch the DevotionBased on Matthew 16:13-20 Who is Jesus? Who is Jesus? That was the topic of discussion I had with a young US Army Soldier. He had studied the world religions—Islam, Christianity, Hinduism—and concluded that Jesus was a good teacher, a moral example, but not Savior. “Who do people say I am?” Jesus asked his disciples. They shared the whisperings they heard as they mingled with the crowds and listened in the marketplaces, “One of the prophets from old, raised from the dead.”

Watch the DevotionBased on Ephesians 1:4-6 You Are Chosen At the time of this recording, I first learned the names of the four US Soldiers who gave their lives in service to our country: Sgt. Michael Swinton, Sgt. Angel Rampersad, 1st Lt. Tyler Feehan, Pfc. Isabella Gonzales. Combat, war, death, physical wounds, the unseen wounds of trauma and moral injury—these are all evidence of the presence of the devil at work in our world, and the influence of sin on the hearts of sinful people who want

Watch the DevotionBased on 1 Timothy 6:11-16 Fight the Good Fight What are you willing to fight for? When you signed the dotted line, you said to the country, “I am willing to fight for you, for justice, for freedom; I am willing to fight against all enemies foreign and domestic.” And I thank you for that. Take that same willingness and apply it to your spiritual life. What are you willing to fight for? In a letter to another pastor the apostle Paul commands Timothy, “Fight the good fight of

Watch the Devotion Based on Isaiah 55:10-11 Sown and Planted When I visited the Republic of Korea last month, I met with Jim Brandt and his wife Kathy. They live in Thailand and are part of the Asia-Oceania Team. Part of their responsibilities are to plant house churches. Jim mentors and coaches over 700 groups who gather around Word and Sacrament in the Asia-Oceania region. That’s incredible! Over 700 groups of people who want to grow in the promises of Jesus and who are going out with those

Watch the Devotion Based on Psalm 33:12 The Nation When my wife and I traveled to the Republic of Korea last month we toured the DMZ. On that tour we had the privilege of meeting a man who had served in the North Korean Army for 10 years. He eventually escaped and defected, making his way to South Korea. He explained the deplorable living conditions and the oppressive nature of the North Korean government. But to see the joy on his face as he described the freedoms he now enjoyed living in South

Watch the DevotionBased on Matthew 10:32-33 Forgiven Fathers Since this Sunday is Father’s Day, I’d like to say happy Father’s Day to the men who have the privilege of serving the vocations of both father and war fighter. Happy Father’s Day also to those men who serve as the supportive spouse to their wives who serve in our nation’s military. And since it’s Father’s Day, I’d like to share a little bit about my father. At his confirmation he was given Matthew 10:32-33 as his confirmation

Watch the DevotionBased on Numbers 27:15-23 Relieved of Duty, Not Relieved of Grace “Because of your insubordination I am relieving you of command.” Those are words that no one wants to hear, and yet these are the very words the Lord spoke to his servant leader Moses. Moses had led the nation of Israel out of Egypt, through the wilderness for 40 years and was about to lead the people into the Promised Land. But God stopped him short. The reason? “You disobeyed my command to honor me as holy

Watch the DevotionBased on 1 Timothy 1:15-16 No Sin Too Great for Grace There are some interesting characters in the Bible. There is a man who killed another man in a fit of anger. Later he made excuses and tried to wiggle his way out of God’s call to lead his nation of Israel. You might know him as Moses. Another man absolutely ravaged Christ’s church, torturing and murdering Christians. He called himself the chief of sinners. You might know him as the Apostle Paul. Another man worked for a

Watch the DevotionBased on Matthew 21:1-11 MAYDAY. MAYDAY. MAYDAY. The call comes through on VHF Channel 16, “MAYDAY. MAYDAY. MAYDAY.” Help me! The vessel is taking on water. There is a medical emergency. The vessel is on fire. Help me! When that distress signal comes in, the U.S. Coast Guard gathers the critical information, broadcasts an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast to nearby vessels and then dispatches rescue assets like a boat or helicopter. Watch the DevotionBased on Luke 7:1-10 Under Authority: The Word That Saves A Soldier needed a chaplain, so he sent for a Jewish rabbi. This might have made sense if the Soldier was Jewish, but he was not. When the officer’s messengers reached the rabbi they pleaded with him, “This man deserves to have you come immediately. One of his subordinates is very sick and about to die. You need to come with us now!” The Jewish rabbi went with them. While he was on his way the rabbi was met by friends of

Watch the DevotionBased on Isaiah 7:10-14 It Will Not Happen “It will not happen. There’s no probable way they can win the battle.” These words could have been spoken during the Revolutionary War. When you read the history of the armed forces under General Washington’s command—the untrained militiamen, the undisciplined Continental Army, the circumstances leading up to that bleak winter at Valley Forge—it wasn’t going to happen. Their situation was desperate. Until a foreigner, a stranger named

Watch the DevotionBased on Isaiah 35:3-4 Do Not Be Afraid I’m certain you’ve heard it at least once the past couple of weeks and will continue to hear it until December 25th if not until January 1st—that old-time classic, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” But I know that’s not always true. The holiday season can lend itself to more tension in the family. Tighter budgets as families plan for Christmas gifting and Christmas travel create financial strain. There can be stress from family
