Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast

Her Shrink Ray Eye is a podcast about miniature art, figure painting, box dioramas, scale modeling, perception, and creative practice. Hosted by miniature artist Joan Biediger, the show explores miniature work from a woman’s, outsider perspective at the bench. Rather than stopping at technique, Her Shrink Ray Eye looks at how small constructed worlds actually work: how scale changes perception, how figures and dioramas hold story, and how miniature art can reveal the way we see. Thoughtful,

Why We Keep Adding to Miniature Scenes: When One...

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/09/30

Why can one empty corner in a miniature scene suddenly start to feel unfinished? In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I use a small workshop box diorama as an example to look at what can happen when one reasonable addition leads to another. A crate fills an empty corner. Then the crate looks isolated. A few loose parts go beside it, the surrounding floor begins to look too clean, and before long the scene contains far more than originally planned. Research on visual attention, decision-making,

The Point of No Return: Why the First Cut Changes a...

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/09/16

What changes the moment you make the first permanent cut into a miniature or model kit?In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I look at that point of no return through figure conversion, scale modeling, psychology, and the experience of working at the bench. A resin figure can sit untouched with several possible futures. Then the saw goes through the shoulder, the original pose is no longer available, and every decision that follows has to work with the altered figure. I explore why that first

The Parts Bin Is Not Junk: Seeing Old Model Parts...

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/09/02

I have bins and little bags full of model parts I saved because they looked useful, interesting, or simply too good to throw away. But once we know what a part was made for, that familiar identity can make it harder to see what else the shape might be good for later. In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I look at functional fixedness, beginning with psychologist Karl Duncker’s famous candle problem and then bringing the idea into the hobby room. I explore why familiar parts can be difficult to

Artistic Paralysis At the Bench: I Still Couldn't...

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/08/19

I thought I had figured out why choosing my next miniature project had become so difficult. I had several good options, each offering something different, and I understood why comparing them kept getting complicated. The problem was that understanding it still did not help me choose. In this episode, I look at what happens when creative decision-making turns into repeated reconsideration and the decision keeps reopening before it can become action. I explore choice overload, anticipated regret,

You Don't Need the Next Best Project

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/08/05

What happens when you have several strong miniature project ideas, but no clear sense of which one to begin? In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I look at why choosing a next project can become surprisingly difficult when each option offers something different. One may be more ambitious. Another may be more practical. One may strengthen a skill, while another offers more pleasure, originality, or creative freedom. I explore the psychology of multi-attribute choice, the pressure to identify the

The Wrong Feeling: Unexpected Emotion in Miniature Art

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/07/22

What happens when a familiar miniature carries an emotion we do not expect? In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I look at what I call The Wrong Feeling: the moment when a recognizable subject still reads clearly, but its emotional treatment shifts. A handshake can feel suspicious instead of polite. A gift can bring disappointment instead of delight. A promotion can feel like a loss instead of a success. I explore how miniature artists can create that second emotion through lighting, composition,

The Idea Before the Miniature: What Makes Inspiration...

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/07/08

Where does a miniature really begin? For me, it often starts in a notebook or a magazine clipping, a paused movie scene, an old photograph, or a title that made sense for one night and may not survive the next morning. I date those notes because the dates tell me something. Some ideas still have a pulse years later. Others go flat as soon as I return to the page. This episode is about that sorting process. I look at old photographs, old movies, museum cases, historical subjects, and ordinary places

Can a Silent Miniature Make Noise?

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/06/24

Can a miniature make noise without actually producing sound? In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I look at the strange acoustic life of silent miniature scenes. A machine room can seem to hum. A painted neon sign can suggest a faint buzz. A bell caught at the top of its swing can carry the idea of a ring, even when nothing in the room makes a sound. Drawing on research into sound-associated images, auditory memory, auditory pareidolia, and the perception of silence, I explore how looking is not

Before the Figure Resolves: Why Unfinished Bodies...

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/06/10

Why do unfinished figures feel different from unfinished objects? In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I look at the moment before a figure fully resolves. A jacket that still needs highlights or a base that needs more texture usually reads as unfinished work. But a blank face, an unpainted eye, separated hands, visible armature, or skin tones that have not come together yet can feel different because those areas belong to the parts of the figure we already read as human. This episode explores why

When the Viewer Becomes Part of the Scene

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/05/27

In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I’m looking at what happens when a viewer becomes part of the miniature, not as a literal figure inside the scene, but as someone physically and perceptually placed by it.A miniature may be finished on the bench, but as an experience, it is not quite complete until someone encounters it. The viewer arrives with a body, a height, a distance, and a position. They lean in, shift their angle, peer through an opening, or notice an empty place that seems to address

The Miniature as Controlled Illusion

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/05/13

In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I look at miniatures as controlled illusions: not tricks or gimmicks but carefully arranged systems of visual cues.A miniature asks the viewer to trust what they see, what they infer, and what their mind completes. Scale, surface, light, placement, edges, and omission all shape whether that illusion holds or begins to weaken. Drawing on ideas from predictive processing, scene perception, amodal completion, scale perception, cue integration, Gestalt grouping,

The Bench Blindness Experiment: What Changes When...

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/04/29

This episode is a simple experiment you can do with your own work.At our workbench, we spend so much time looking at a piece that familiarity starts to take over. We know where everything is. We know what we intended. Over time, that can make it harder to see what the viewer will actually notice. In this episode, I guide you through a series of short tests: looking at your miniature up close, stepping back, viewing it through a phone, reducing detail, and checking what remains in memory. At each

In miniature art, we often focus on detail, realism, and storytelling. But there is another dimension that shapes how a piece is experienced: time.In this episode, I explore how miniatures can suggest not just a single moment, but a longer stretch of time. Some scenes feel fixed and complete. Others feel interrupted, as if something has just happened or is about to happen. That difference has less to do with complexity or narrative, and more to do with how time is embedded in the work. Drawing on

The Uncanny Miniature: Why Some Small Scenes Disturb Us

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/04/01

In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I explore the uncanny in miniature art as more than simple creepiness or horror. This episode looks at that subtler kind of unease that occurs when something in a miniature feels almost natural, almost believable, and yet still somehow wrong.Drawing on psychology, art theory, uncanny valley research, dolls, domestic interiors, and the peculiar nature of miniature work itself, the discussion considers why some small scenes can carry such strong psychological

Storytelling Isn't One Thing

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/03/18

In miniature art, we often say that a piece “tells a story.” The phrase is used as praise, as a category, and increasingly as a measure of depth. But what do we actually mean when we say it?In this episode, I take a closer look at storytelling as a perceptual experience rather than a slogan. Not all narrative functions the same way. Some miniatures present clear sequences of events. Others rely on atmosphere and implication. Still others invite the viewer to participate in meaning-making by leaving

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/03/04

In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I’m exploring that strange sense of standing in front of a technically flawless miniature work that somehow feels lifeless. What makes a miniature feel alive? And why can a perfectly executed scene sometimes feel closed or emotionally distant?I look at the difference between technical mastery and presence, and how over-resolution, excessive control, and hyper-finish can unintentionally seal a work off from the viewer. Drawing on research in perception and

Building Without a Finished Vision

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/02/18

What happens when you start a build and you don’t yet know what it’s going to become? In this episode, I explore the long middle of the creative process. The stretch of time when the work is underway, decisions are being made, but the final vision hasn’t fully formed. You’re not stuck, you’re not blocked, you’re building. But the ending isn’t clear yet. Drawing from design research on ill-defined problems, reflective practice, and thinking-in-action, I talk about why this stage feels uncomfortable,

Thinking With Your Hands

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/02/04

In this episode I explore what it really means to “think with your hands” in miniature work. Rather than treating ideas as something that appear fully formed before we begin, this episode looks at how thinking often unfolds through contact with materials, scale, tools, and space.Miniature work makes this process unusually visible. At small scale, every adjustment matters, feedback happens quickly, and perception often leads explanation. Ideas often don’t announce themselves as plans; they take

Memory Maps: A Spatial Approach to Creative Thinking...

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/01/21

In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I explore Memory Maps as an interesting, practical source of creative inspiration for miniature painters and modelers. Instead of relying on endless reference images, I look at how the places we know through repetition, such as hallways, stairwells, workspaces, and in-between rooms, can be translated into inspiration buildable miniature scenes. I talk about why memory-based ideas often feel more original, how spatial logic helps a miniature read as a place, and

Color Through the Shrink Ray: Memory, Power, and...

Her Shrink Ray Eye Podcast ·

2026/01/07

We talk about color all the time in miniature painting and modeling, but usually as technique. This episode steps away from recipes and rules to look at what color is doing underneath all of that.In this conversation, I explore how color carries memory, cultural meaning, and emotional weight long before we ever sit down at the bench. Why certain colors feel familiar or unsettling. Why emotion color charts don’t always hold up in real life. How childhood palettes linger. How grief attaches itself to
