1 Now when the people complained, it displeased the Lord; for the Lord heard it, and His anger was aroused. So the fire of the Lord burned among them, and consumed some in the outskirts of the camp. 2 Then the people cried out to Moses, and when Moses prayed to the Lord, the fire was quenched. 3 So he called the name of the place Taberah, because the fire of the Lord had burned among them.

"The Little Monk" Trinity 18 2026

Preaching and Teaching from St. John Ev. Lutheran... ·

In Luther’s day, the little monk wore a hood. He fasted on the right days, prayed at the right hours, and walked out into the wilderness to be holy. But in our day, the little monk doesn’t wear a hood. He wears work boots. He’s too busy. But he believes exactly what the old monks believed: that what God commanded is ordinary, and ordinary doesn’t count.

Numbers 10:11–14 (NKJV)11 Now it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud was taken up from above the tabernacle of the Testimony. 12 And the children of Israel set out from the Wilderness of Sinai on their journeys; then the cloud settled down in the Wilderness of Paran. 13 So they started out for the first time according to the command of the Lord by the hand of Moses.14 The standard of the camp of the children of Judah set out first according to

15 Now on the day that the tabernacle was raised up, the cloud covered the tabernacle, the tent of the Testimony; from evening until morning it was above the tabernacle like the appearance of fire. 16 So it was always: the cloud covered it by day, and the appearance of fire by night. 17 Whenever the cloud was taken up from above the tabernacle, after that the children of Israel would journey; and in the place where the cloud settled, there the children of Israel would pitch their tents. 18 At the

1 I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Everyone wants to know why he was healed twice. The two touches teach that faith comes in stages: first you see a little, then you see more. You may have heard the sermon with the eye doctor in it, “Better one, or better two?” It’s comforting, and it’s a lie, because it makes the healing wait on the patient. If the second touch is about your progress, then your sight depends on the one thing the text never mentions. But the blind man does nothing. He is led, touched, asked, and touched again
