Before Word Won, It Arrived on a Demo Disk

Dead Internet Almanac ·

2026/10/08

In 1983, Microsoft shipped Word for MS-DOS into an office world ruled by command keys, printer codes, WordStar, and WordPerfect. Its free demo disk was not just a sample; it was a wager that workers would accept a mouse, visual editing, and a screen that tried to resemble the printed page. On a command-line machine, Word asked people to trade muscle memory for a future they could barely see yet.Early Word was cramped, blocky, and far from dominant, but it carried ideas from Xerox PARC

September 15: A Search Result With a Pulse

Dead Internet Almanac ·

2026/10/06

Stack Overflow began as a rescue system for programmers trapped in the ruins of old web help: dead forums, buried answers, spam, and endless threads where the fix might exist somewhere on page seven. When it launched publicly in September 2008, Joel Spolsky, Jeff Atwood, Geoff Dalgas, and Jarrod Dixon offered a sharper bargain: ask real programming questions, let the best answers rise, mark the fix, and leave behind a cleaner trail for the next person with the same error. This episode

September 7: Plug the Dreamcast Into the Wall

Dead Internet Almanac ·

2026/10/01

SegaNet turned the Dreamcast’s built-in modem into a promise: that a console could be more than a box for discs, and the living room could connect to real opponents, chats, email, tournaments, and the wider internet through the same phone line the family used for calls. Launched on September 7, 2000, Sega’s $21.95-a-month service tried to sell the online gaming future before that future had become normal, wrapping console play, PC access, a gamer portal, and an ISP contract into one very

On September 9, 1999, Sega launched the Dreamcast in America like a prophecy: a $199 white console with a built-in modem, a controller with a tiny screen, and a slogan that made it feel alive. After years of damaged trust from add-ons and abrupt hardware exits, Sega needed one clean message to cut through the noise: buy the box, plug it in, and watch the future arrive. That future came with friction. The Dreamcast imagined online play, email, chat, web browsing, downloads, lobbies, and

September 1: When Roblox Was Still a Toy Box

Dead Internet Almanac ·

2026/09/24

Roblox began less like a polished platform and more like a door left open: a sparse alpha-test website with a few links, a login box, and a promise that people could “play online with others” or work on their own creations. Before it became a daily world for millions, it was an “online building toy” shaped by its founders’ roots in educational physics software and by the first small community of users whose names still appeared on the homepage like a classroom signup sheet. The episode

Dead Internet Almanac ·

A broken laser pointer became the unlikely first legend of AuctionWeb, the person-to-person auction site Pierre Omidyar launched in 1995 before it became eBay. Listed honestly as nonworking, the pointer still sold for $14.83 to Canadian buyer Mark Fraser, proving something larger than the object itself: on the early commercial web, even flawed things could find value if strangers trusted the listing, the seller, and the fragile system connecting them. This episode traces eBay’s origins

Blaster made a hidden Windows flaw brutally visible: a gray XP shutdown box, a sixty-second countdown, and the name NT Authority System pulling unsaved work into oblivion. When the worm hit in August 2003, it turned a technical vulnerability in Microsoft’s Remote Procedure Call service into a household crisis, especially for unpatched Windows 2000 and XP machines exposed to the network. The episode follows how MSBlast spread without email tricks or user clicks, scanning port 135, opening a

Dead Internet Almanac ·

2026/09/15

Google’s 2009 acquisition of On2 Technologies looked minor from the outside: a $106.5 million stock deal for a codec company most web users had never heard of. But On2 lived in the invisible machinery that made online video possible, building compression technology that powered products from Adobe, Skype, Nokia, Sony, Brightcove, and others. Google was not simply buying old video tools; it was buying leverage in the fight over how video would work on the open web.At the time, web video

August 4: A Search Box Became Evidence

Dead Internet Almanac ·

2026/09/10

In 2006, AOL Research released what looked like a generous academic dataset: three months of search logs from hundreds of thousands of users, stripped of names and replaced with anonymous numbers. But the structure of the file preserved each person’s searches under a persistent identifier, turning scattered queries into intimate trails. What seemed like raw material for better search ranking and spelling correction quickly revealed itself as something far more dangerous: biographies

Before console multiplayer became a menu option, XBAND made it a ritual: cartridge into modem, modem into console, console into phone jack, and suddenly the living room had another player hiding somewhere beyond the dial tone. Catapult’s strange little device turned Mortal Kombat, Madden, and other supported Genesis and Super Nintendo games into early online arenas, complete with usernames, rankings, messages, and the first hints of a console social network. This episode follows XBAND at

Ethereum’s first live network did not arrive like a polished product launch. Frontier began when early users generated the same Genesis block, loaded it into their clients, and chose to trust a shared file full of Ether sale records, hashes, warnings, and rough edges. The network launched with real money nearby, but the Ethereum team kept telling ordinary users to wait, because this was still developer territory. This episode returns to July 2015, before Ethereum became shorthand for smart

2026/08/11

Radio Shack’s TRS-80 Model I arrived in August 1977 with little fanfare, overshadowed by bomb threats and evacuations in New York. But the small gray computer marked a quiet turning point: a complete personal computer package that ordinary shoppers could buy off a store counter instead of assembling from a kit. With four kilobytes of memory, cassette-tape storage, a monitor, BASIC, and a pair of games, it looked simple — but it invited people into a new ritual of typing, saving, loading,

Microsoft’s Internet Games were small enough to feel permanent: Backgammon, Checkers, Spades, Hearts, and Reversi tucked into Windows like household fixtures. But when Microsoft shut down the servers for Windows XP and ME in 2019, and Windows 7 in 2020, those familiar tables revealed what they had always been: quiet online services dependent on distant infrastructure. This episode looks back at a gentler era of internet play, when multiplayer could mean opening the Start Menu and being

Dead Internet Almanac ·

2026/08/04

Just before IBM introduced the PC, Microsoft made a quiet $50,000 move that helped define the next decade of computing: it bought full rights to the operating system that would become MS-DOS. What began as a practical stopgap from Seattle Computer Products soon became the blinking command prompt millions of users knew — drive letters, clipped filenames, directory listings, and a machine waiting for exact instructions before Windows softened the experience. The episode follows the unlikely

In 2005, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was already one of the most notorious games in America — but its real crisis began when a modder found something buried inside the discs already sitting on store shelves. The “Hot Coffee” mod did not add new content so much as unlock disabled code, exposing an explicit minigame Rockstar had left inside the shipped product. That discovery turned a technical detail into a cultural firestorm: if players were never meant to access it, was it still part of

Google Play Games arrived in 2013 with a neat little dream: turn every Android game into something connected, persistent, and social. Code Red turned a patched Microsoft IIS flaw into one of the early web’s defining infrastructure scares. What began as strange packet logs on Friday the 13th became a self-spreading worm that used a vulnerable Index Server component to seize Windows web servers with Local System privileges, then made each infected machine hunt for the next. AOL Cut Netscape Loose. Mozilla Kept Walking.

Dead Internet Almanac ·

In July 2003, as AOL dismantled what remained of Netscape’s browser operation, Mozilla was given a lifeboat: a new nonprofit foundation with money, trademarks, domains, equipment, and a mission to keep the open web’s tools alive outside the control of any single company. What looked like dry incorporation paperwork was really a transfer of custody for the code, culture, and ideals that had grown out of Netscape Navigator — once the front door to the web, now a fading brand in the shadow of

WebTV promised to bring the internet into the living room before the living room was ready for it. It was an attempt to make the internet feel less like a computer chore and more like a household appliance. The idea was humane, ambitious, and almost
