Chapter 1:16 Detective Stamwick investigates

Sophia Kelly Audiobooks Podcast - People of the Rock ·

2026/09/23

This short scene introduces the character of Detective Barbara Stamwick, who is investigating the disappearance of Lucy and Brenda. Are they a couple? Are they roommates? Is Michael Lucy’s boyfriend? murderer? Why do they have a picture of the world’s largest pirogi on their fridge? What is/was going on in the past? (Time travel makes verb tenses tricky, which is a big part of why the book is written in the present tense throughout. No matter where and when you are is ‘now’ to someone. Photocredit:

Chapter 1 Scene 15 -‘Old’ Vancouver in the Future

Sophia Kelly Audiobooks Podcast - People of the Rock ·

2026/09/23

This is the segment of People of the Rock that many people have told me they love because of the hope and the first glimpse into a vision of a positive future where things are done well, both ecologically and socially. We continue with the appropriate technology in the form of local transportation and look at the way urban design would be changed by the transportation changes. We get another view into the gift economy, which some would say is traditional to the Pacific Northwest. Gift economies were

Chapter 1 Scene 14 - The Rock explains time travel

Sophia Kelly Audiobooks Podcast - People of the Rock ·

2026/09/16

Did you know that the concept of being able to travel in time through human consciousness is called chronesthesia? The term was created by Estonian born ( Canadian experimental psychologist and cognitive neuroscientist Endel Tulving. I’ve adapted this idea to the character of the Rock, who is in fact, an actual, ordinary-ish rock. I figure if a self conscious rock could exist, as believers in animistic faiths like Wicca and Shintoism might hold, then the ability to travel forward or backward in

Chapter 1 Scene 13b Marija

Sophia Kelly Audiobooks Podcast - People of the Rock ·

2026/09/16

Marija is a historian in the future, assigned to watch Lucy. In this very short scene we see an inkling of her future, non-professional interest in the Rock woman. No worries, I’ve also released a longer scene today. Future and Eco notes Appropriate technologyThe bicycle is an example of appropriate technology in EF Schumacher terms. It’s a technology that is no more complex or resource-intensive than it needs to be to get the job done, it can be locally produced, repaired and fueled and is

Chapter 1 Scene 13a Lucy

Sophia Kelly Audiobooks Podcast - People of the Rock ·

2026/09/10

This scene shows the future transportation and we get to know Marija (pronounced Ma-REE-dja) a little better. For much of human history, commercial and passenger transportation was done using wind power on sailboats. I imagined that given that fossil fuel would be exhausted in 500 years (or we’d smartened up about it) local water transportation in a sustainable, hyperlocal, gift economy society would revert to this easy to implement transportation type. Enjoy! I’d love it if you would restack this

Chapter 1 Scene 9 The Rock

Sophia Kelly Audiobooks Podcast - People of the Rock ·

2026/08/12

This is a short scene introducing the title character, the Rock, who is, literally, a rock. A rock with a rich internal life and some interesting skills that are key to the story. When I say the Rock, in this segment, think of the word ‘rock’ to be capitalized, like a name. The Rock would scoff at such fine niceties, but would appreciate the affection behind them. I have always been an animist, a word the Cambridge English Dictionary defines as “a person who believes all natural things, such as

Chapter 1 Scene 8 Rosemary Explains the Sitch

Sophia Kelly Audiobooks Podcast - People of the Rock ·

2026/08/07

In this scene Lucy enters the culture of the future, and learns about what is going on with the rock people from a very very old woman. When I wrote it, I wanted to get my head around what it would be in a future where women’s oppression seemed like a quaint old custom, and where natural building was normalized.Interested in the whole book, the study guide, or info about the author and my other books? visit www.sophiakelly.ca Get full access to Sophia Kelly at

Chapter 1 Scene 6 Part 2 People of the Rock

Sophia Kelly Audiobooks Podcast - People of the Rock ·

Where the heck is Lucy? No one wants to know more than she does. Following Marija down the path reminds her of some spicy and non-spicy paths she’s followed a beautiful woman down before. Chapter 1 scene 6 first half

Sophia Kelly Audiobooks Podcast - People of the Rock ·

2026/07/17

This is one of my favourite scenes from the book - where Lucy emerges in the future, naked and feeling good, and has a happy, sensual moment in the forest before being discovered by a beautiful stranger. We all emerge naked into our future don’t we? Reborn? I stopped mid-way because it’s a very long scene. I mispronounced Marija’s name for some reason. It’s not Maria, but MarEE - dja. Sorry, I’ll do better in future. The rest was so perfect I couldn’t bear to re-record it. Recording copyright (C)

Chapter 1 Scene 5 the equation of Dirac - People of...

Sophia Kelly Audiobooks Podcast - People of the Rock ·

2026/07/16

This recording is really short - but the concept is important to understanding the recurring themes of interconnection at a distance between different people, different times, different events throughout the book. Once connected, even separated, there is a mystical, scientific, or quantum mechanical way that things are entwined, entangled with one another. I do not claim to have written this meme, for which I did not find an author, but here is a representation of the equation (the Equado de Dirac

Let it be - in honour of Global Beatles day

Sophia Kelly Audiobooks Podcast - People of the Rock ·

2025/06/25

So my windows operating system informs me that it is Global Beattles Day - a holiday I’ve never heard of. The Beatles were a favourite of an old boyfriend, way back when I had boyfriends, so I have learned the lyrics to many of their songs, and have a fondness for them, especially their 1970 hit “Let it Be”. That song has been such a comfort to me that, when writing a death scene in People of the Rock, I used this ‘ancient hymn’ as a link between the present and the future, to illustrate how my

Reading the first scene of People of the Rock

Sophia Kelly Audiobooks Podcast - People of the Rock ·

I’ve been writing professionally most of my life, but this author thing is new. I’m reading an excerpt from the very beginning of my book, People of the Rock, due out September 30th (squee!) In this scene, we meet our protagonist Lucy and her gay bestie Michael, on a foggy day in Vancouver. If you are looking for a hopeful (and sometimes spicy) story of how we could emerge from pandemics, climate change and political yuckiness, set in Canada, this is it. I’m planning to post more video installments
