High Uintas

Wild About Utah ·

2026/10/05

Camping in the High Uintah’s is never easy. Due to the rugged landscape and high elevations, every trip offers its own unique adventure. On this occasion, my long-time hunting buddy and two labs, after a 4-mile hike with 2000 feet of vertical climb, were setting up tents in the dark with pelting graupel, lightning, and … Continue reading "High Uintas"

Bees in the backyard

Wild About Utah ·

2026/09/28

In the wild, a swarm of bees looking for a new home will often settle into a hollow in a tree. In some Cache Valley backyards, however. some bees will be quite content to move into a white 12×8 inch box sitting a few inches off the ground. This is how my friend Richard got … Continue reading "Bees in the backyard"

A Close Encounter of the Cricket Kind

Wild About Utah ·

2026/09/21

“Dad, what kind of bug is this?” Normally, I try not to get distracted when going up as steep an incline as the Wellsville Mountains—stopping and starting again is as much work as slowly plodding on—but, I decided that a side quest to look at a bug might give me an excuse for a much-needed … Continue reading "A Close Encounter of the Cricket Kind"

Don’t Move a Mussel

Wild About Utah ·

2026/09/14

You’ve heard the phrases, “Don’t move a mussel,” (spelled m-u-s-s-e-l) and “Stop aquatic hitch hikers.” If you have ever transported a watercraft, ranging in size from a paddle board to wake surf boat, you’ve probably been annoyed by the inconvenience of stopping at mandatory boat check stations for invasive species watercraft inspections. The threat is … Continue reading "Don’t Move a Mussel"

A Surprise visit with Cache Valley’s distant bird...

Wild About Utah ·

2026/08/24

Awhile back, I was riding my bicycle along country roads in Cache Valley, when suddenly 6 unusual looking chicks ran across the road in single file right in front of me. I slammed on the brakes just in time as the chicks disappeared down the farmhouse driveway on the other side of the road. I … Continue reading "A Surprise visit with Cache Valley’s distant bird relatives"

Winged Bullets of Beauty

Wild About Utah ·

2026/08/17

My morning outing was bedazzled by masters of their aerial universe. Their agility is beyond imagination, capturing their prey with a gaping maw while flying at maximum speed, winged bullets ripping through the air. The swallows and swifts are truly marvels of aerodynamic design, with a pilot whose abilities know no bounds. They rival bats … Continue reading "Winged Bullets of Beauty"

Connecting Classroom Learning to the World

Wild About Utah ·

2026/08/10

Ever since I started centering my entire 2nd-grade classroom instruction around a bird theme, one of the most important benefits I’ve seen is how learning at school suddenly becomes important and valuable to students outside the school walls, and because of that, students become advocates for learning to their families. My birding classroom goes well … Continue reading "Connecting Classroom Learning to the World"

Falconry Terms

Wild About Utah ·

2026/07/27

In 1962, Rachael Carson rocked the bird watching world with her book Silent Spring. She identified the commonly used pesticide DDT as the culprit responsible for declining populations of eagles, falcons and hawks. Rachael was able to prove that once DDT got into the food chain, it fatally weakened the eggshells of these birds. DDT … Continue reading "Falconry Terms"

Elkweed/Green Gentian

Wild About Utah ·

2026/07/20

In keeping with our nation’s 250-year celebration, Red, White, and Blue have decorated Utah’s higher elevations, from Tony Grove in the north to Cedar Breaks in the south. Sprinkled in between are mountain meadows carpeted with wildflowers, Indian paintbrush, penstemons, columbine, patriots of the loveliest hues. Additionally, nature’s erosional forces have created monuments found in … Continue reading "Elkweed/Green Gentian"

Summer School: How to Make Tent?

Wild About Utah ·

2026/07/13

Years ago, when I taught at Mount Logan Middle School in northern Utah, we ran two-week outdoor-based summer school programs. The model, “Bringing Literature to Life,” was the mastermind of two now-retired teachers, Dave Anderson and Bryce Passey. Teachers offered a variety of summer courses around this theme—all were funded by grants. Each session was … Continue reading "Summer School: How to Make Tent?"

I’d Like to Report a Murder

Wild About Utah ·

2026/07/06

Driving the return road from our family’s trip to Goblin Valley, I scoured the lonely San Rafael landscape, searching for something to keep me alert. Suddenly, a shadow peeled off the ground and drifted into the sky. Was that an eagle? A second later, I sighed. That was no eagle. It was a blasted crow. … Continue reading "I’d Like to Report a Murder"

Sacred Mountains and a Beautiful Spirit

Wild About Utah ·

2026/06/15

I collapsed in a tangled heap of rope at my campsite in the Teton’s North Fork of Cascade Canyon after summiting the Grand Teton. I was alone, unprepared, but couldn’t resist the summit climb. Why would someone of normal mind risk life and limb for such a foolhardy venture? Since that climb, I’ve summited many … Continue reading "Sacred Mountains and a Beautiful Spirit"

Nature and Art

Wild About Utah ·

2026/04/13

As an educator focused on outdoor experiential learning, I’m always looking for ways to integrate nature’s aesthetic beauty into my teaching. Aldo Leopold wrote, “Our ability to perceive quality in nature begins, as in art, with the pretty. It expands through successive stages of the beautiful to values as yet uncaptured by language.” This quote … Continue reading "Nature and Art"
