Rewilding In Action ·

2026/09/03

I’m often amazed by natures' ability to recover by itself when given a chance. However with less than 1% native vegetation, the Canterbury Plains is a good candidate for some planting to kickstart natural native forest regeneration.Te Ara Kakariki has a restoration goal of restoring native biodiversity through planting native forest stepping stones or 'Greendots' to help birds disperse seed and expand native forest. For this episode I’ve come to a Greendot near Tai Tapu close to the base of the

In New Zealand, introduced pigs even in low numbers have very destructive effects on our native bush and wildlife. In this episode (recorded in July 2026) I’ve come to Banks Peninsula to find out about the very recent elimination of over 3000 pigs from 22,000 hectares there – potentially NZ’s largest removal of a population that was established through illegal releases. My guest, Graham Corbishley led the project as contracted project manager for Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust. In this episode of Rewilding In Action, Maureen Howard is on the Otago Peninsula to talk to a couple who are rewilding their property to help their very special populations of invertebrates thrive. What invertebrate species are living there? And what do they do to protect the invertebrates? Keep listening. You may never squish a bug again! How important is ongoing monitoring in rewilding? Should we be aiming to preserve nature to an historical biodiversity target? And, how can humans be part of a rewilded world? In this episode of Rewilding in Action (which follows on from Episode 35), Maureen Howard continues her deep dive with Professor Steve Carver from the University of Leeds into the IUCN’s five rewilding guidelines, as well as what distinguishes passive rewilding from other types of rewilding. 2026/06/25

In this episode of Rewilding in Action, guest host Jon Bakos takes the mic and talks to Maureen Howard about some of the restoration activities happening at Dalmore Reserve, an urban piece of council owned land in Dunedin that’s being cared for by the community group Wild Dalmore Reserve for the last six years. What does the group do and in particular what techniques are they using to tackle the weeds there that don’t involve chemicals? Many thanks to Ribbonwood Nurseries for kindly sponsoring this

Rewilding is catching on but do we really know what it is? Join me, Maureen Howard as I chat with Professor Steve Carver from the University of Leeds about rewilding definitions and the first two of the IUCN CEM’s five rewilding guidelines that he and his team developed. Some of the things we talk about are - What does allowing nature to lead mean? And why is it so important that rewilding happens at a large landscape scale? Many thanks to TASTE NATURE for kindly sponsoring this episode

Questions for Hugh include: How are pest animals such as rabbits tackled? What do you think of the Predator Free New Zealand goal? Do you support substitutes for extinct species such as moa? How are vulnerable species like rifleman doing? Questions for Matt include: Does Knepp Estate sell animals for

Rewilding an ecosystem requires good ongoing monitoring. In this episode I visit Craigieburn Reserve in Dunedin with iNaturalist expert John Barkla to find out how we can improve our monitoring with iNaturalist, an easy to use citizen science platform. We’ll also get some tips on how to tell if a tree has been planted or or not. 30 - Beavering in the Blue Mountains with Check Dams

Rewilding In Action ·

2025/12/11

The Blue Mountain Swamps of NSW rely on water to survive and thrive. However much of the water that flows into them now comes via stormwater pipes. To protect and restore ecosystem functioning to the wetlands, the council and community groups are creating leaky check dams. What is a check dam? And how is water quality improved by woody weeds? Join me in the Blue Mountains as I find out from my guest James Bevan how much fun it is to make a check dam! Many thanks to Wild Dunedin for supporting this

The team at Hinewai Reserve look after about 1650ha of land close to Akaraoa on Banks Peninsula: 4% of which is old growth forest with the rest already naturally regenerated or regenerating to native bush. Join me, Maureen Howard, for the second part of this chat with botanist Dr Hugh Wilson, manager at Hinewai Reserve. Sometimes, a very effective nursery species for natural native forest regeneration is an exotic dead plantation! In this episode I rejoin Bob Webster and Carol Jensen above Little River on Banks Peninsula to find out about the technique of frilling and how they used it to tackle three dense macrocarpa plantations with the help of some running mates. What is frilling? And how and why does it work? Listen in to find out! This episode of Rewilding in Action is kindly supported by the Rod Donald Banks

In this episode I visit the Banks Peninsula property of my guests Bob Webster and Carol Jensen who purchased land when in their 60s. 25 - Woody Weed or Nursery Plant?

Rewilding In Action ·

2025/10/02

Exotic woody weeds such as sycamore can lead to the permanent replacement of a native ecosystem with a exotic one. Sometimes however, woody weeds can act as a nursery species for natives to grow through. Under what conditions does this happen? And with what exotic species? My guest weed ecologist Dr Kate McAlpine shares her research and knowledge about natural native forest regeneration through woody weeds. Please enjoy this replay from December 2024Should we rewild rivers - when floods can bring damage to property and sometimes loss of life? In this episode I chat with my guest river scientist Professor Gary Brierley about the importance of seeing rivers as dynamic entities within the landscape, rather than water channels to manage. We discuss how we can live well with our water catchments - from those that feed our magnificent glacier fed rivers to those that supply the streams on our

Muehlenbeckia australis has a reputation as an invasive vine. On the other hand it is a native that can benefit rare species such as the local pakake / sealion population. Today we’re headed to the harbour mouth of Dunedin along the West Harbour, to the small coastal community of Aramoana. Join me, Maureen Howard as I chat with conservationist Bradley Curnow, chair of the Aramoana Conservation Charitable Trust, about the pakake that have returned to breed here. When forests are young, flammable species like manuka, kanuka and gorse dominate. To reduce the risk of fire, an effective tool is to plant a native green firebreak between our homes and our naturally rewilding forest. What’s a green firebreak? What species should we plant? How wide should the firebreak be, where should it go and how can we look after it? Join Maureen Howard on Rewilding in Action with her guest Associate Professor Dr Tim Curran. The Miyawaki approach involves densely planting a comprehensive variety of eco-sourced native forest plants into enriched soil to grow plants faster. How does it compare with standard planting or natural native forest regeneration? The Dunedin City Council keen to find out! In this episode of Rewilding in Action, Maureen Howard hosts a panel discussion organised by the DCC about the Miyawaki method. Maureen’s guests on the panel are Colin Davis from Nelson Whakatu Microforest Initiative, DCC Parks
