The caller was five or six when they started lying awake at night, scared of death. What frightened them was the idea of not existing at all. That wasn't something a kid could bring up to adults, so they mostly thought about it alone. Around the same time, their mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was the 1980s, and nobody explained much to the kids. When the cancer came back years later, the caller figured she'd get better, because she had before. In this lesson, we delve into the crucial guidance documents from the International Medical Device Regulators Forum (IMDRF) concerning Software as a Medical Device (SaMD). We explore the definition of SaMD, its role as independent software running on general-purpose hardware, and the significant impact it has on the medical device landscape. One of the great innovations of the factory was the imposition of industrial discipline,

Send us Fan Mail In the first episode of our Montaigne series, Samuel Woodall and Jack Thomson ask why Michel de Montaigne made himself the subject of his Essays. We explore his classical education, friendship and public life, his retreat to the tower library, and how writing became a way to examine a mind that keeps changing. This article was created by Forethought. See all of our research on our website. How persuasive are present-day AI systems? Unfortunately, it is surprisingly difficult to know where AI capabilities in persuasion are today (September 2026), or even three months ago. Benchmarking AI capabilities well is always hard, but I think humanity's understanding of AI's persuasive abilities is substantially worse than our understanding of, say, AI cybersecurity or math abilities. We’ll explore David Chalmers' "Hard Problem," the role of psychedelics, ego dissolution, and why science might be looking in the wrong place for answers. Join us on a mind-bending journey

Anything in life can be richer and sweeter if you slow down and pay attention, but some things reward attention more than others. The different amount of rewardingness per attention is sometimes socially constructed and thus arbitrary to some degree. But it's genuinely nice, to have others who have also paid attention to the thing tell you about the interesting parts that you might have missed, and this can enrich your own experience. But relying on others to tell you what to pay attention to, and

Epistemic status: I came up with this an hour ago, this is a fun light-hearted post where I'm enjoying illustrating this idea, which seems true for the most part. [Crossposted from my blog, BlueprintingHeaven.] When it comes to the frontier of AI development, we have this concept of "jaggedness". AIs are much better at some kinds of tasks than others. And to that I say, you are assuming our circle of capabilities is God! How dare you suggest our circle is the Right and True one? To be clear,
