A museum colleague said that she came because I was speaking her love language.I started by posing the question: What if museums were places where we learn about art and also places that help us feel better and live better? What if, as the New York Times columnist Bret Stephens said just last week, “museums

In this episode, we tackle 1989's Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, the ambitious installment that took Jason Voorhees out of Crystal Lake and onto the high seas.Directed by Rob Hedden, the film follows a graduating high school class on a cruise ship bound for New York City, unaware that an undead Jason (played once again by Kane Hodder) has stowed away to stalk them. In this week’s Moments of Mood episode, you'll learn the 4 questions curators, juries, and publishers silently ask about every photography project, and how to answer them in 100 words so your work actually gets seen. I take apart the idea that photography speaks for itself, starting with the Vivian Maier story everyone gets backwards, and share what Shana Lopes, photography curator at SFMOMA, told me she actually needs to hear from an artist: why she has to defend every acquisition in front o...

There is a page in Emma's notebook that has been written out, in more or less the same words, most weeks for months.Five things on it. Email the curator she met last spring. Book the studio visit. Get the new work up on the website. Finish the residency application. And every week, in that big looping handwriting of hers, the same five things go down on a clean page, and by the following week not one of them has a line through it. Sacred imagery is more than decoration. It is a visual language—an attempt to give form to what cannot be seen, and to connect the human experience with something greater than ourselves. Every city carries layers of history beneath its surface. In Roaming (2006), Carrie Mae Weems photographs herself walking and standing within monumental public spaces, usually with her back to the camera. Rather than asking us to look at her, the photographs invite us to look with her. In this episode of Photography and Walking, we explore how Roaming transforms walking into a way of reading history. We consider cities as palimpsests, places where traces of earlier lives remain within the pre...

There are parts of us that spend years hidden beneath the surface. Quietly growing. Quietly waiting. Quietly asking to be seen. This is my unveiling. A gentle pulling back of the veil that once cloaked the pieces of myself I was afraid to reveal—the voice I kept quiet, the words I kept within, the art, the music, the wonder, the awkwardness, the softness, the questions, the love. Perhaps this is not so much an introduction as it is an opening. A door left ajar. A little light spil...
