It's the transition from the long course season to the short course season, a period that's normally pretty uneventful but there are some swimmers out there that are testing that theory.

Three Key Learning Points:* In a 100 metre short course race, 50 metres of it is affected by walls.* Dive starts, turns and finishes are not skill work sitting beside your training. They are half the race.* Every dive is a race dive. Every turn is a race turn. Build it into what you’re already doing.Short course racing. Some people love it. Some people not so much. But when I talk to coaches about their short course plans, their programs and their workouts, they nearly always go one of two ways. The

Every swimmer knows the feeling: the finish is close, but the body is tired. This episode explores endurance, mental strength, training, setbacks, and the powerful decision to keep moving when the final meters feel like the hardest ones.

Swimming may appear simple, but every movement in the water requires balance, timing, breathing, and control. This episode explores how swimmers learn to work with the water instead of fighting it, and why patience and consistency are at the heart of becoming a better swimmer.

In this GMM takeover of the SwimSwam Podcast, we have Gretchen Walsh, fresh off her haul of seven medals at the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships: five golds and two silvers. And Pan Pacs was arguably her weakest overall competition of the year. In 2026, Gretchen made the choice to travel and race fast everywhere: Beijing, Rome, Fort Lauderdale, U.S. Nationals and Pan Pacs. Both survived, but the fear followed her for the next three decades: no diving into the deep end, no jumping off boats, a quiet, lifelong avoidance of anything past her depth. Then, in her forties, she said yes to rowing the Pacific, unsupported and with two crew-mates whose safety depended on her fear staying in check. In this

In this solo episode, I use a recent DM about "high elbow recovery" to break down why one true biomechanical observation doesn't necessarily lead to one correct swimming technique. A bent arm does reduce rotational inertia. But a straighter recovery creates a longer lever with more angular momentum, and that
